Default Road Tax lapsed and no SORN! What to do?

This must be a very common problem. You don't renew your road tax and you don't do a SORN. Either through stupidity, lethargy or madness. You then come to your senses and decide to apply for road tax. You then find that you have a big problem. The V10 application form requires the date your current tax or SORN ends. What do you put for this - the date your tax lapsed? In which case will it be accepted? - possibly with a fine to cover the missing back tax. Will they also require a declaration whether the car has been off the road? I am sure that many people in this situation just bury their heads in the sand and continue untaxed. I wonder how many of the current untaxed road users are in this situation. Forced to continue breaking the law because they don't know how to get out of it.

Hopefully there is some path to redemption for the miserable sinner. Is the best solution to come clean with the DVLA and throw yourself on their mercy? If so, what do you think the total damage would be?

if i were you , come clean with dvla
go into your dvla local office and explain
you will prob have to pay the back tax
i say this as soon dvla will contact you with an 80 quid fine
better use that to pay back tax
they are very quick at a county courticon claim as well

its all about targets to be met

This has happened to me before, and then renewed the tax online AFTER the tax had expired.

Nothing prevented me, and got tax fine - no complaints from DVLA.

I understand your point about burying your head in the sandicon - in a way, you feel like you stick your head above the parapet waving a flag saying "had no tax!!!" when renewing tax if expired. It is important that people realise that as they have a full database of all tax expirations, they know ANYWAY.

Thanks postggj. What if the the car has not been off the road (and for some months)? Coming completely clean with DVLA could be very costly.

MrShed. Online renewal would be great. Do you think it would work a few months later?

No idea - but I dont see why not.

I think the important thing is that they know you havent renewed anyway, and it is only a matter of time until they get to you. Even if they notice when you renew, you will get a (relatively) small fine - believe you me, if you have been driving untaxed for some months, then that is a bloody good result.
