    Default Barclaycard and email

No post can be found on this topic so here goes.

B/card recently amended section 10.3 of their t's and c's making it a requirement that telephone numbers and email addresses be updated by customers.
I don't wish to pass this info to the bank. Not just because it allows them (and associates) to spam me, but because it's pretty scary stuff for a bank to be able to cross reference all links to an individual email address over the Internet.
I can't see a reason why an email address (or for that matter a telephone number) is a necessary requirement, but can think of many ways to abuse such information.
American banks tend to use phone numbers as part of the identity checking process, but is it allowed here? Is it possible to refuse to provide this info?

Cross reference what links?? Unless you are extremely careless with your email address, then it should NEVER appear on the internet. As a quick test, just searched on three email addresses I have, one of which I've had for nearly 10 years and use to sign up for EVERYTHING, and not one match. Same for my phone numbers. Sorry, but this smacks of the whole privacy bandwagon, when there is little or no real impact on privacy. The only people ACTUALLY impacted by this would be people involved in debt avoidance, which cannot be advocated.

Hi Smeegaan an welcome to CAGicon.

I can see no reason to provide BC with an email addy if you don't want to.

There are obvious reasons for them wanting your phone no. so they can contact you to make you offers of services or to chase you if your a/c is out of order.

You can refuse to provide the details if you wish, but I suspect they can also refuse to continue to provide their services to you.

    Well, my thoughts exactly.
I'm really surprised there's not much interesticon over this change to the terms.

While some people don't see this as an issue, in my field of internet security anything which invades personal security or privacy is a problem.
I've seen many events not considered to be a privacy problem later found to be major security issues.

Okay, so cancel one card because you "don't like the terms". The problem is it's likely other companies will follow suit. Today credit cards are the only method of payment for some products. We can't cancel them all.

Oh .. and just to answer Mr Shred who commented "The only people ACTUALLY impacted by this would be people involved in debt avoidance, which cannot be advocated." ranks right along side "Innocent people don't run away."

I think Jeremy Clarkson, once thought in a similar way, but we all know what happened when he said he didn't care who had his phone number and email address don't we

Again.. why would Barclaycard make it compulsory to provide an email address?
