Holiday Cancellation

I might need to cancel my holiday icon

as my mum is needs a major operation within the next 3 months (we were going on 6th October).
I have paid the £300 deposit for 4 people and the rest is due on Monday.

I am hoping the other couple have taken out their insurance (I have travel insurance with my bank account - Norwich Union I think)

If I cancel, I have to pay another £300 (we paid low deposit) and I was wandering whether I can claim this on my travel insurance. Someone told me that they would pay for me, but not my husband which is stupid as he would obviously not go without me (or maybe he would!!!)

You need to check your policy, I expect you won't have problems with your husband, insurers would expect you both need to cancel.
The first problem as I see are the other couple, if you a the named person then you may be demed to be responsible for all payment, may be they will go alone.
The second problem, could be your own insuers especially if they try to claim your mothers operation is due to a pre-existing condition.

It says in the book any treatment within the last 12 months and she hasn't had heart problems for 8 yrs. I'll see what happens

Is your husband named on the travel insurance policy? If so, I can't see it being a problem; they should pay for his cancellation as well.

May I reccomend that once you have cancelled with the agent, you contact the insurers ASAP.
I had to cancel a holiday icon

Last year, insurance my wife had was for a couple the company look just two months to process the claim.
If you run into problems there a plenty of experienced people to advise you.

Before you do, make sure you get it in writing from her dr/consultant that it would be unwise for you to go... To put it bluntly, the riskier he makes it sound, the least room for the insco to wriggle out of paying.

YOu need to find out ASAP, preferable before Monday, you also need to find out whether they'd intend to still go or not, etc...

If he's on the insurance, he's covered too.

First find out what the other couple's situation is and let us know and we can then advise further.

If it's a policy through your bank account (I'm guessing Barclays icon

or HSBC

), it covers the accountholder and their spouse if travelling with the accountholder.

The policy defines close relative and I'd bet it includes mother-in-law. So your husband is entitled to claim for cancellation due to illness of his close relative too.

If you have to pay a further cancellation charge, this will be covered too.

The nonly area you might come unstuck is if your mum had her medical condition when you booked the holiday icon

and you didn't declare it. If she's been well for several years, this should be OK though.
