Written by John Kruse, one of the leading experts on Bailiff Law, this consumer friendly guide is essential reading for anyone who comes into contact with a bailiff.
The book is easy to understand and clearly explains the rights
a bailiff has, and also what they cannot do when collecting debts and repossessing goods etc.
I thought that i would post this to tell you exactly how much Abbey value their long standing customers.
I was until recently an Abbey customer and had been for 20 years. I had an overdraft on my account and an Abbey credit card. I never accrued much bank charges and hardly ever exceeded my limit.
Then 18 months ago in the space of 1 month I both lost my job and discovered that I had kidney cancer and had to have a serious and possibly life threatning operation to remove one of my kidneys.
3 days before this operation I went into my local Abbey branch to advise them that I was now both unemployed and liable to be on incapacity benefit for 4 - 6 months and as a result of this some of my direct debits may not get paid as I no longer had a wage going into my account. I was hoping that they display some understanding and sympathy given my circumstances and the fact that I was a long standing customer.
Well how wrong was I! The girl I told this to got straight onto the phone to the collections department and after a very brief conversation with them marched me to the front of the queue for the counter and announced to her colleague on the other side of the glass (well within earshot of the other customers), that I ws to hand in my debit/cheque guarantee card, my credit card and cheque book and that my over draft and credit card was going to be paid off at the rate of £70 each per month (my weekly benefit was £57).
At the time I was too much in a state of shock both about my treatment at the hands of abbey and at my up and coming treatment at the hands of the NHS to do much about it.
I have now paid off my overdraft and have taken great pleasure in telling Abbey to stick their account but I am still having trouble with the credit card debt (I have posted about this on the MBNA forums.
I too have a similar opinion of Abbey. Unfortunately I hadn't found this site at the time, or I would have complained very volubly. I expect it's too late for you to complain either, but you could try.
Hope you are now fully recovered.
