Written by John Kruse, one of the leading experts on Bailiff Law, this consumer friendly guide is essential reading for anyone who comes into contact with a bailiff.
The book is easy to understand and clearly explains the rights
a bailiff has, and also what they cannot do when collecting debts and repossessing goods etc.
I have recently split up with my partner and moved out, she contacted me to inform me that i have to pay BT £62.46 in order to settle the bill so that she can take over the bill. So i gave BT a call last night to inform them that i would be paying the £62.46, but will not be able to make this payment until the 31st July, as i don't get paid till that date.
The rude asian man on the phone told me that i have two days to pay or the service will be terminated, i told him that he can do what he wants with the service and that i am just calling up to settle the bill so that my ex-partner can take over the account, he told me that same thing again, i then was put through to someone else and she informed me that the settlement would be £141.00 yet this is the first time i or my ex-partner has heard of this amount, i reluctantly said fine but i cant pay until the 31st as i've no money till them! she then told me that if i dont pay by tommorow the latest the service would be terminated and a final bill of £400 would be sent to me and that i would have one month to pay that amount by, i would never be able to pay that sort of money in a month! I don't know what to do about this, i have tried negotiating a payment with them but all they are interested in is terminating the account and charging me a massive amount of money, the only option i see is that they send debt collectors round .... can anyone suggest what i can do?
1) Ask the name of the person you are speaking to and if your call is being recorded.
2) Ask them to explain exactly what each amount is for and the reasons for any deadlines (overdue accounts, charges etc).
3) Repeat your offer of payment on the 31st and ask them to note it on your account details, even if they refuse to accept it.
4) Depending on the circumstances, you may have to accept that they may suspend your service until the bill is paid.
Write down everything they say, including amounts and reasons. If they do eventually take you to court (which I doubt they will) they will look pretty silly after turning down an offer of payment!
