Wrote to Egg reclaiming PPI, which was purchased when applying for their credit card; January 2001.
It is believed that the PPI was mis-sold as was under the impression that one would not have been granted the credit card if the PPI was not tken out.
At the time I was self employed and had suffered from back problems since I was about 20 years old, I am now 65. Also, I was not informed by Egg that I could have purchased the PPI elsewhere more cheaply.
Anyhow, I have received two bog off letters from Egg, as follows:-
1. From Egg records, this protection was not sold to you, but was requested by yourself when you applied for the Egg account. I enclose a copy of the information you keyed for your application which cannot be changed.
2. Full information on this insurance was given to you on the Egg web site to enable you to decide whether the cover was appropriate to you
I am sorry to inform you that I am unable to uphold your complaint"
"You chose to take this protection of your own volition during your online Egg Card application on the 1 January 2001.
Confirmatory documents including the Terms & Conditions, were sent to your registered address with the Agreement forms for your Egg Card account. Please find enclosed copies of the documents sent to you for your information.
Egg is an information only provider, as you will see the documents gave you full details of this protection to enable you to decide whether or not this cover was suitable to your needs.
Go to the fos, we will not enter into any more correspondence with you."
In 2001, I did not have a clue about PPI, I just thought well I had better take the PPI or my credit card application could be refused.
I did not realise that my reoccuring back problem; slip disc would prevent me from claiming on the PPI under exclusions.
I did not realise that due to my being self employed that I would only be able claim if I became insolvent/bankrupt and...
I had not idea at the time that PPI could be purchased more cheaply; Egg did not advice me that I could have purchased the PPI elsewhere.
Egg have turned dowm my complaint;
where do I go from here?
Re: Egg Ppi - Self Employed, Pre Existing Condition
Being self employed and having a medical problem are normally not covered by PPI, and therefore has probably been mis sold. The fos may take on the complaint, but it may take sometime. The Financial Leasing Association may be the agency you have to contact before the FOS. They seem to be the agency that dealt with complaints around 2000 and 2001.
Re: Egg Ppi - Self Employed, Pre Existing Condition
My advice on experience but not with Egg is to persevere send them another letter enclosing a doctors letter with information regarding the date of your diagnosis and that you are still sufferring from the condition etc if you get my drift all the info about your condition your GP will put in a letter for you most do it for free. Also enclose documentary evidence i.e. tax info etc about your self employment photo copies are fine any thing from goverement bodies etc, write a stronger letter than your first and ensure you address it to one person the person that signed your last letter, hope this helps
