    Default Speeders to pay extra for police fuel

    Drivers caught speeding in this north Atlanta suburb soon will have to pay an extra $12 — to cover $4-a-gallon gas costs for the police officers who stop them.

    I wonder how long it will be before this get's added here.

    Well, that's a bit unfair, isn't it? I mean, if you are speeding and stopped immediately when they flag you, how does that compare with the one who then engage in a high speed pursuit for 45 mns? Seems to me yet again the "small" offender is going to subsidise the bigger one!!!

    I think it's in principle a good idea. The simple lesson is don't speed and you won't need to think about paying these extra fines. Someone raised a very valid point about someone being pulled over straightaway compared to someone engaging in a long chase - to solve that they should say, the longer the chase is, the more you pay for fuel. If you are flagged over and pull over straightaway, you shouldn't have to pay extra for fuel as the police car has not used any extra fuel.

    It might be annoying but if you don't speed you have nothing to worry about.

    Absolutely, as it is a serious criminal offence to exceed the speed limit by 1 mph

    All very fine in principle but IMV the vast majority of those who refuse to stop are
    1) drunks
    2) Twockers (usually under 18's who can't be done anyway. )
    3) Criminals either fleeing the scene of a crime or with an outstanding warrant

    A spell of porridge for all three categories is would probably be a more effective deterrent than a few quid in fuel fines.

    I was under the impression we were already paying for the police fuel simply by the fact we pay for the police in total anyway. What are they going to do with this money as they are now getting paid twice for it?
