I work full-time for an NHS trust on agenda for change pay scale.
Unsocial hours attract a premium. Now when I do overtime on a weekday I get time and a third. When I do overtime during unsocial hours I get paid overtime but no shift premium. This equates to the same amount as I would get if the unsocial hours were my rota hours ie no extra money for the overtime. I've checked with payroll and they say this is correct. Doesn't seem right to me - any ideas???
As far as I'm aware you would only get shift pay if you were working shifts outside of days. From what you are saying by working overtime on a weekday this takes you into the evening which would attract a premium because you are then working into the evening?
When are you working unsocial hours?
Are these on your rest days?
Have you asked your Union about this?

If I do an extra shift at a weekend as overtime, Sunday for example, I get paid time + 60% for doing the overtime but I don't get the sunday premium (which would be time + 60%). Effectively I get exactly the same pay for that Sunday as I would had I worked it as part of my hours, this doesn't seem right to me. If I worked sunday as part of my hours and did weekday overtime I get paid time + 30% for the weekday hours. Basically I therefore get a bonus for doing overtime on a weekday but not for doing overtime in unsocial hours.
I did ask the union but they haven't got back to me...
I understand what you are saying and I agree it doesn't sound right. It's a while since I worked in the NHS so I have no easy way of checking for you.
Chase the Union, I know we have talked in the past about their rapid responses to queries
You could always raise a formal grievance on this matter and if you are advised that payroll are correct you could always withdraw it later.
