If you feel that you are being treated unfairlyby Brighthouse (or any other company for that matter), you could make a formal complaint.
The new Consumer Protection From Unfair TradingRegulations 2008 create very broad general duties not to trade unfairly and also identify 31 specific practices which are automatically considered to be unfair.

If you are having difficulty with Brighthouse and you think that the problems may be covered by CPUT then write a letter to the OFT. It costs nothing. There is no risk to you and if you are wrong, then they will tell you and explain why. If you are right then you may have helped to remedy the situation for others in the future.
If your compaint is upheld then you will be able to use that finding in any legal action you might be involved in in the future.
