Some I know went to withdraw some cash (£200) and was given more (£230) by an RBS ATM. The receipt shows the right amount and the mini statement she asked for straight away also showed the correct amount.
Should they return the cash and report the error ?
Be under no illusion that the bank will let this go, when the owner of the machine does the audit and notices money missing it will check each transaction for that money cassette and check how many notes was dispensed amoungst other things.
It has happended in the past where notes "stick" together in the cassettes if not loaded correctly, and in these instances the bank never knows where the money went, as far as the bank is concerned only £50k was ever loaded into the money cassette, when in fact 2 x £10 where stuck together.
You can inform the bank, let them know, most likely they'll ask for it back, but who knows might just say keep it, which I doubt.
Or wait until the bank contact you, and ask for it back, if you have the intention of permantly depriving the bank of the £30 then it is theft, if your holding on to the money waiting for the rightful owner to come and claim it, then your doing nothing wrong, and if after a reasonable amount of time has gone by and no one has come to claim it then it becomes yours.
But you do need to make attempts to trace the owner of the money, and if the bank knows you have it and you don't offer to return it, it is really worth the possibilty of receiving a criminal record for theft?
