Unfortunately I have only just realised that after about 18mths of living at a new address, I have not changed the registered keepers address for my vehicle. I have however changed the address on my driving license.
This situation has come to light now since I realised I am two months overdue on my car tax and am about to sell my car in 5days time.
I fully intend to pay up on my car tax tomorrow despite the fact that I will only own it for another 4days after that, however I am really nervous that I have been fined and might also have received speeding fines over the past 18mths that i won't have paid as I am guessing they will have been sent to the registered keepers address (my old address).
I wondered if anyone could shed light on what might happen to me in this situation. Assuming that I might have picked up a few speeding fines and a penalty for late tax payment, is there a possibility that at some point in the future I could be landed with a huge fine and a possible license disqualification?
I am unsure how the DVLA work, in that they have my home address registered to my license but the registered keepers address is different. If I am to sell the car in 4days time will any outstanding fines cause the new owner a problem when the registered keepers address is transferred.
Any clarification that anyone could provide on this issue would be gratefully received.
You may find it difficult to sell, especially if the addresses don't match. The new owner may not wish to wait for the reprinted V5C with your details to be supplied to him. If I was in this situation, I'd tax the car in 31st May and give send off the V5 counterfoil to confirm transfer. Vehicles are not linked to licence records, so you may be OK.
Yes I will certainly get the tax asap. Regarding the V5, I am selling as part exchange to a trader, so not a private sale. Does this change anything or do you think it makes sense to send off the V5 counterfoil anyway?
As a part-ex the dealer may well be happy to await the revised V5 (private buyers usually don't). Personally, I'd just make sure the dealer stamps Section 9 of the V5C and gives that to you to send to the DVLA (Yellow strip).
Hi, kkr33. When you p/ex your car give the dealer the V5 you have now, it will not make any difference what address is on it. There is no need to go through an address change now. Be sure to keep the V5C/3 (yellow part) and get the dealer to sign it. Make sure YOU send this to Swansea. If the dealer offers to send it off for you, don't allow it. If he forgets, you will remain the RK.

It will depend if there are any fines in the first place. I would be very surprised if there would be any repurcussions over the issue of you not notifying DVLA of your change of address regarding the vehicle, but any potential speeding issues are not so easy to predict. Much will depend on how long ago they were and the policies of the police forces concerned and how long they might pursue them for.
Change of ownership? You mean Registered Keeper? They can ask, but you're not legally obliged to give it, not your Date of Birth (which they also ask for). The only form that I've found that makes an issue of this is a form for First Registration of an imported vehicle (new or S/h).
