Default Extended Maternity leave help please?

    Hi all
My friend is Polish and has basic understanding of the employment system however i am asking this question on her behalf.

She has been on maternityicon leave since Nov 1st 2007 and gave birth on January 4th 2008. She has worked for the smae complany for almost 3 years and would like to extend her maternity leave to the full 52 weeks available but is having problem composing a letter to her employer. Does anyone have any templates for this sort of thing?

    Many thanks

I don't believe that it has to follow any set pattern or wording, and the employer will normally assume that the full leave will be taken unless he is advised that the employee intends to return to work after Stat maternityicon Leave.

On that basis, something along the lines of:-

    Dear xxxxxxxx

I am writing to confirm that it is my intention to exercise my right to take the full period of Additional Maternity Leave in addition to the Statutory Leave period. It is therefore my intention to return to work on xxxxxxxxx.

I would be grateful if you could advise which, if any, of my current employment terms will be affected by this decision, and also whether you require any further information from me at this time.

    Yours sincerely,

    xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx

Whether it is relevant or not in your friend's organisation I don't know, but it is possible that certain benefits do not accrue whlst on Additional Maternity Leave, hence the request for any relevant information on this in the letter. It is also possible that she may not return to exactly the same job as when she left, although does retain the right to return to one of equal pay and status.

Any advice given is done so on the assumption that recipients will also take professional advice where appropriate.

Please note that PMs may well not be answered unless they relate to issues which cannot be included in a Forum post, and also because I am only available infrequently at present
