I love this forum. Discovered it about a month ago and it has been a font of knowledge ever since and a great help. I am now in need of some advice.
Until a few years ago, I wasn't the best with money and I made a few stupid mistakes and was foolish enough to put things in my name instead of my then partners. I am not too proud to say I was very very stupid and run up some debts. I have since struggled to pay the larger ones off and the smaller ones I have had to ignore as I simply haven't been able to afford to pay them. Some of these are now over 6 years old. They still write to my parents, which thankfully my parents just send back saying I haven't lived there for years and whereabouts unknown. My parents rock!!! (I live 9 doors away )
Can I just ignore these older debts that I have never acknowledged in any way. If I could I would love to pay them all back and in full, but I just cannot afford to do so.
Also I am paying off debts, which I know I owe, yet when I get an Experian and Equifax credit report, these debts are not even listed and yet I know I have poort credit. Why is this??
Any advice on this would be extremely helpful and make my husband very very happy as I am that busy stressing, its driving him mad.
Generally speaking, if a debt has been unacknowledged/unpaid for 6 years or more, it cannot now be legally enforced so is effectively uncollectable.
The good thing is, if you morally accept that you still owe the debts, you can pay them off in future when you are able to do so. Do not do so in writing until you wish to settle though.
Sorry, I can't answer about the credit ref agencies, but maybe someone else will.
