Default Mechanical advice needed for my Saxo

    Hi there,

I am hoping that anyone who has knowledge of car mechanics can help me with this one.

I bought a 52 reg Citroen Saxo from a small garage 3 weeks ago. Since the car is still in its' warranty I am have booked it in back at the garage tomorrow as I have noticed a couple of things that I'm unsure about.

The first thing which has happened since I have had it is creaking/knocking (unsure how to describe it) in the steering when I go round corners. It disappears when I straighten the wheel.

Also the last couple of days I have heard a large revving sound from the engine when it's switched on, I can be sitting in a car park with the engine switched on, and the engine becomes really noisy and I am sure I can smell a burning. I turned the engine off when it did this yesterday and it keeps whirring even when its switched off and dies off, i then switched it back on and it was roaring loudly.

I am just looking for any possible ideas really, just so I know how big a job it's going to be. Thanks for any help.

    Hi Jenni,

Not a mechanic but a couple of suggestions.

Knocking when turning is possibly a CVJ (constant velocity joint). Likely happens when turning hard, maybe to one side only.

Revving sound is maybe the electric fan which comes on only when the engine reaches a certain temperature. Likely to happen when you are sitting in traffic with little air-flow through radiator. May still run-on when engine is switched off and you may smell the hot air which is heated as it's drawn through radiator grill to cool the engine.

The CVJ(s) should be replaced if knocking and worn under the warranty.

The cooling fan doesn't sound like a fault to me.

Thanks Slick, put my car into the garage last night. The garage have been really good with me (the owner is a family friend) so I know they will fix whatever is wrong with it. Just glad I went with a good garage this time!

If it is not reaching the top gear then it weill consume a lot more fuel than you expect.

If you know where the gearbox dipstick is, pull it out and have a look at the colour of the fluid, it should be transparent and a nice red colour. If it is brown/brownish, then you have a gearbox problem.
