My name is Siān and I've just joined the site today thanks to Martin's Money Tips! I had no idea that so many people have suffered these terrible charges and that so much can be done. If anybody could help me, I'd be extremely grateful.
I have just received a letter from Barlcaycard saying that the minimum payment I made was not enough to cover the interest on my card and because I am close to my credit limit, they charged me £20. I phoned them up today to try and sort it out and they refunded me £10 of the charge and said that it would n't affect my credit rating that much. I was n't actually aware until now that they operate in such a sneaky way. Surely they should include the interest in the monthly charge? I'm not upset about the charge so much but I'm concerned about my credit rating which is my next topic.
Up until last year I was in serious financial problems. I was in £10,000 and really could n't see a way out, my minimum repayments were nowhere near clearing the debts. It came to the point when I was very depressed and terrified of opening the post, so I did get into arrears. I joined a "Debt consildation" Scheme to which I paid £200 a month (including £40) interest. I paid this for 3 months and I was still getting nasty letters form my creditors. I did get a CCJ for my Debenhams account. I then found out that this company had not contacted my creditors, hence nothing was getting paid. Things got so bad that I had to tell my parents and thankfully they helped me by getting a loan to pay off my debts and I paid them back. I am of course very lucky that they managed to help me but I am concerned about my credit rating and also angry that this company managed to get away with incompetence at the very least. I did manage to get back 2 months worth of charges from the debt consolidation company at least.
Am I entitled to any kind of refund for some of the charges I was paying while with this company? And can anyone point me in the right way of getting some advice about improving my credit rating?
I know this is a really long post but I would really appreciate any help at all.
