Default Working Tax Credit and Previous Tax Record

I am self-employed on a very low income and have just learnt that I may be entitled to working tax credit. However I have fallen behind with my income tax and national insurance payments owing to financial problems. My questions are these:

    (1) In determining elibigility for working tax credit, are previous tax and national-insurance contributions taken into account?

    (2) Could I be deemed ineligible because I have not been able to keep up with my payments?

    (3) I if apply now for tax credits will it bring the Inland Revenue down on my head to demand back payments that I simply am unable to pay?

No to all three of those Fairplay. Also, if you are on a low income you do not need to pay National Insurance - you can get an exemption certificate. Hopefully you can get this back dated.

But claims for tax credit are treated completely separately to all those other things. So go ahead and get a claim in asap.

Hiya try this site it is very useful and could give hind-sight to any tax credit claim you are thinking of applying for...

    HM Revenue & Customs:Tax Credits

It also has a DO I QUAILFY section, just follow the online questions and pages and it will tell you whether you might be entitled to claim and gives a rough amount payable at the last page...Good luck with the claim...
