Written by John Kruse, one of the leading experts on Bailiff Law, this consumer friendly guide is essential reading for anyone who comes into contact with a bailiff.
The book is easy to understand and clearly explains the rights
a bailiff has, and also what they cannot do when collecting debts and repossessing goods etc.
Its been a while since my last post....I sucessfully reclaimed charges from several credit cards and bank accounts well over a year ago and have not had problems since until now.
I opened a new joint A&L Account last year but had not started using the account as I was getting married and changing jobs then it was Christmas etc etc.
In Feb when I got my statement I noticed a charge of £5 for an underfunding fee, at this point there was £2.27 in the account which took the account to £2.73 overdrawn. However on top of this they had also then charged me £5 per day for being overdrawn thus resulting in a further £45 in charges.
I straight away paid in £2.28 to leave the account 1p in credit but I accidently looked at the previous balance and the account was 45p overdrawn and has been since 5th Mar which has now result in more £5 per day charges.
I have never been so furious and upset in my entire life one simple charge of £5 will now cost me in excess of £150. Ive brusied my hand where I have punched the wall and made a hole! I am furious and I feel robbed!!!!! I don't want to damage my credit rating to should I just pay them the money?
It is frustrating. Have you spoken to them at all? I've had charges added by Natwest for something trivial and after some negotiation they did refund them.
I'm midway through the tunnel, but getting closer to the light.
Just found this forum through searching for other people who have been hammered with ridiculous charges from alliance & leicester.
I am in the same position as the original poster. I transfer money to my A & L account every month to cover the DD for my mortgage payment to them.
I misread my mortgage statement in the beginning of January - it was telling me my payment had gone down from January, so I mistakenly thought that my payment due at the end of January would be at the lower rate - as it said "amount due from January 2008".
Anyway, this resulted in me putting only enough money in the account to cover the new lower payment which apparently would be Feb's payment...
So I went overdrawn by £60. I of course didn't realise this until I got a letter a few days later telling me I had got a account review fee of £25.
Oh well, I thought, I can live with that. However, on checking my account later in the month (I only use it to pay the mortgage), I found that they had charged me £5 for 7 days.
So I instantly transferred more than enough money in to clear it all.
Imagine my surprise when I went to transfer some money in today, to find that they'd debited another 21 days @ £5 a day!
So by going overdrawn £60 by misreading a poorly written letter, I received £165 in bank charges!
I am absolutely furious with this. But who to talk to?
I remember going overdrawn many years ago with Natwest, and they made every effort to contact me by phone to tell me that I needed to settle to avoid charges.
I can't help thinking that Alliance & Leicester are not too bothered about doing this - after all, the longer the customer is in the dark, the more money they make!
