I work for Tesco but they do not have a private car park for staff cars. So we have to use the same car park as the one the customers use. Last Friday i wasa at work till 11 at night and live some 8 miles from the Tesco i work at. The next morning my partner went to check my oil and water in my car and found that i had deep scratches on all four doors and all frour wings. I complained the next day to the management that someone had done this to my car. on my shift the previous day. One manager asked me to get some quotes from repair specialists. However a week has gone by and the manager of thge store now says that we park there at our own risk. I need some help here anyone

Hi Bailey,

I regret to say, I have to agree - I'm afraid that the car is parked at your own risk. The same as all the customers' are.

Whilst any employer owes it's employees (and anyone else) a duty of care, that obligation does not extend to the employees possesions.

However the duty of care does apply cos they supply us with lockers to put our bags in and cloakrooms to hang our coats in , but our most valuable commodity our cars they cannot. Also when the customers property is damaged in some while they tell the customers to get it fixed or cleaned and bring the bill into tesco and they will pay. So in other words they look after the customers more than there staff.

Already asked the security about cctv and where my car was parked the cameras are not able to see because the outside boarding obstructs the view of some of the car park. I feel very let down as an employee i wonder if the staff with the copmpany cars are treated the same. No way does tesco look after you.

Playing 'Devil's Advocate' here!

If any other persons personal car was damaged whilst they were at work, would their employer reimburse them whether the car was parked in the local 'Pay and display' or in a staff car park. I have to say 'I think not'.

Company cars would normally be insured under the company's fleet policy.

I use my own car on my employer's business and get VERY basic expenses, anything happens to my car and it's down to my own car insurance icon

(with resulting penalties) or my own pocket.

Not what you want to hear, but my opinion on 26 years experience in this legal area.

Mm not good is it but at the moment very miffed and very angry that i work for tesco and all this show you care by the management does not mean a thing. Perhaps they ought to do something with their billions of pounds they make and look after their staff a little better..

I think you're being totally unrealistic in your expectations.

The damage to your car is completely unrelated to your employment by Tesco and trying to connect the two is illogical. I would be equally pi**ed off, but at the vandal who actually caused the damage not Tesco.

Now micheal the situation being that it would be nice to have a astaff car park that is monitored by some sort of cctv. As part of our staff benefits and not to be always just like a customer with a bit of consideration for our staff while on duty in our shift. Is that so unrealistic micheal

It would be very nice, the reality is that there isn't and you knew that. Whether you come to work by car or not and where you park it is your responsibility.

Every little helps. Not it this case it seems. It would be nice if Tesco spent some of the billions they have made the last year and treated their employees a bit better.

That said I've some friends who've worked for both Asda and Tesco. They report conditions between Tesco and Asda are comparable (i.e. crap for most employees). But for really crap (and be thankful you don't work for them) treatment of employees try Makro. One friend of mine received a written warning because she was being "too helpful to the customers".

Thanks for your comment Pin1 with you Micheal i seemed to have really ruffled your feathers, I appreciate all comments given and i hope like we all do that for every difficult situation there is a solution of some sort.
