About the speakers
Rita Jordan
is Professor in Autism Studies in the School of Education, The University of Birmingham. She has taught in primary, nursery and special schools including 9 years as Deputy Principal of a school for children with Autism. She also taught clinical linguistics, special education, and primary education at University of Hertfordshire. Rita now leads a team of academics providing a range of professional development programmes in ASD at the University of Birmingham. She has served on national and international task forces on autism and consults world-wide in this area. Rita spent 4 months as a visiting professor in Clinical Psychology at the University of Kyushu in Japan.
Olga Bogdashina
MA Education (Autism), PhD (Linguistics) has worked extensively in the field of autism as teacher, lecturer and researcher, with a particular interest
in sensory-perceptual and communication problems in autism. Since 1994, she has been the director of the first Day Centre for autistic children in the Ukraine and the President of the Autism Society, Ukraine. Olga teaches and lectures around the world. She is currently a Visiting Lecturer at Birmingham University and Consultant Psychologist for Services for Adults with Autism, Doncaster, UK. She has a teenage autistic son. Olga has published a number of books on the subject.
Geoff Evans
is an experienced social worker with over 25 years experience of supporting children and young people with Autistic Spectrum Disorder and their families. He is an experienced conference speaker and trainer throughout the country and abroad. His past posts have been Head of Social Work Services at a special school for children with Autistic Spectrum Disorders, Senior Lecturer in Autism at Sheffield Hallam University. He is currently Expert advisor and trainer for The Options Group.
Ros Blackburn
is an adult with autism. At 3 months old she appeared withdrawn, isolated and in a world of her own. At 6 months she was diagnosed profoundly deaf, which later proved to be incorrect. At a year old she was diagnosed very severely autistic but with average intellectual ability. Now Ros tends to feel that although many areas of her condition have remained severe, others, such as her language delay, have disappeared almost completely. Ros has given many presentations about her autism to professional audiences throughout the UK . Ros’ talks give a unique, personal and graphic insight into the experiences of a person with autism.
Mick Connelly
(Chair) is manager of the Physical, Sensory and Complex Needs service in Blackpool Council’s Children and Young People’s Department. Mick has considerable experience in the field of autism as a teacher, Principal of a school for children with autism, through work with a number of education authorities and social services departments and with the National Autistic Society. He has provided significant input into a number of research projects, policy papers and curriculum guidelines for children with ASD, and training for those working with children.
About the event
This event brings together a range of high calibre speakers with significant
knowledge and experience of the Autistic Spectrum. The day seeks to explore the
physical, mental and emotional impact of the process of change to adulthood,
giving a rare opportunity to consider the elements taken together and to reflect on
how each affects the other. Various perspectives from the theoretical to the
practical will reveal insights for professionals, practitioners and parents, with an
interest in helping those on the autistic spectrum grow into adulthood with less
trauma and greater success.
Who should attend?
Parents and carers of those with Autism/Asperger’s Syndrome, Educational
Psychologists, Teachers, Teaching Assistants, Children’s Services staff, Health
Professionals, Local Authority staff and anyone with a general interest in the
Autistic Spectrum.
How to apply + fees
Please complete the application form on the back of the flyer and forward to the
contact at the bottom of the form. The deadline for applications is 2 April 2008. As
interest is expected to be high for this event you are advised to complete your
application early .
COURSE FEES:
£120.00 (+VAT @ £21.00);
£65.00 (+VAT @ £11.38) for parents and carers, people with ASD.
Course fee includes refreshments and lunch.
Fees are payable in advance of the conference. Where applicants are unable
to attend the event fees may not be refunded if we are unable to allocate all
tickets, however a substitute attendee may attend. If we are able to
reallocate tickets and provide a refund, a £10 administration fee will apply.
