Default ADHD FINALLY Sorted out but I look back at the devistation.

    Hi Guys,

I'm 28 years old and have been treated for ADHD (until I came to the UK in 2003).

When I first arrived here, I cave my GP at the time a letter from my psychiatrist (back home) explaining my history, that I was diagnosed with ADHD at 6 and ahve been treated up and until I left.

Despite this, I was never treated for it. Iw as promised to see specialists, this that and the other and never once was invited on a consultation.

My life since then has been a rollercoaster of depression, suicides, various disorders (which they thought up I guess) and every time, I've told them I HAVE ADHD.

I even have on consultant, Dr Alkari of Trinity house in Sheerness, Kent say to me 'Its impossible you have ADHD, youre an adult' I was stunned.

I've lost jobs, I've lost homes, I've lost girlfriends, money the works all because of what I know is wrong with me.

Only YESTERDAY was I finally put on Concerta (Methylphenidat) to treat it *huge relief*. I actlly cried infront of the doctor.

All I wanted was to go back to what I needed. Now I've got a trail of devistation behind me, a CV which was superb how has a hole burned in it since I moved here, horrendous scars on my arms from the suicide attempts.

Now is there _anything_ I can do about this? I want these doctors of the past names, shamed and I want compensation for all of this hell I've been through. The one thing, I asked for I enver got.

    Any help would be great,

    Cheers

    Adrian

    Hi,
what a load of rubbish these doctors talk, my mother had ADHD which also developed into adult ADHD, she was the mother from hell, as kids we were ruled by fear, although no one knew why she was like this Ive looked into our family history and she attempted suicide a couple of times, she ended up admitting herself to the psychiatric ward a couple of times because she wanted to kill herself and she did have adult ADHD, my younger brother also has ADHD, worse when he was a child, even though I can still see it in him, he is not as bad as when he was a child, but his son also ADHD, at 15 years old he takes medication but hes a nightmare and its only a matter of time before he ends up in prison. these kids should be helped, but they have to have a criminal record before this is offered, whats wrong with our society???

I doubt you will ever be compensated for what you have been through, the doctors will always have ways of passing you from pillar to post, its taken me 6 yearsicon to have my son diagnosed as Autistic, and the fight ive had with my lacal educational department to get him help in school has been a long and hard road, just got him a statement of special eduacational needs after 6 long years, they would rather see these kids end up in trouble with the police, young offenders or drug addicts which cost our society a fortune to treat, as well as all the offending, robberies house and car break ins, early intervention is a no no in my area, Great has gone out of Great Britain, we are now just a dumping groung for any one who can "get in" have kids who are then English, the money can be found to keep these people but not to help our own, Im not against anyone from any other country who come here to live peacefully, work to earn their living and support their famlies, I know a few people who are not British, my next door neighbour is from Portugal and his wife is from India, they are very respectful, hard working people.
Good and bad in every culture, but England's going down the drain fast.

The only ADULT ADHD clinic that I know of is at the Maudsley in London. I found it almost impossible to get concerta on the NHS. It is unlicensed for adults and so GPs and PCTs have an excuse to refuse to prescribe. Often this is what they want. An excuse to avoid paying money.

    Good luck though!

I have ADHD too and Asperger's I went through school dx'ed as having ADHD until I got to the end of school. Then at the end of school I was told I would grow out of it. I went through College, and then Uni. During Uni I screwed up with my concentration and failed my degree (Note at this point I was under the impression that ADHD ended at 16 and I had not been dx'ed as having Aspergers). Then after completing my HND (I could have re-sat my degree had it been due to disability that I failed it - unfortunatly I didn't know I was disabled at the time), it was finally my Venture Scout Leader who told me I have Aspergers. It then took me nearly 2 years to get a diagnosis of Asperger's, and then after that I found out that ADHD does continue into adults (despite what some idiots in the NHS believe), and now apparently the doctor is referring me to someone to assess me in 3 weeks time. Also it is quite funny that you should say that Concerta is unlicenced for adults, when I read a report from Cambridge University about how Ritalin can be used by adults with Asperger's Syndrome to control concentration. Also it's even more funny that despite Drs saying that ADHD doesn't continue into adulthood, why the hell are the NHS wasting so much money with two centres dedicated to adult ADHD?? and why does every other country admit that ADHD does continue into adulthood? The main reason I've found for this is that people with ADHD go through hyper-focus stages, and then they totally forget about it, so if you tell someone with ADHD that you will refer them to someone about it within 3 weeks, it's ok 'cos in 3 weeks time there concentration wont be on sorting ADHD out anymore but on something else - and that way it saves the NHS from paying out for medication for adults with ADHD.

I dont believe you can "grow out" of ADHD, my younger brother was full on ADHD as a child, he ran away from school every day at play time, jumped over the walland this was at 5-6 years old, he would wander around the streets on his own until he was found, the school often could not contact my mother so I would then be taken out of school to take care of him, I can remember many times, more so in the winter months when I was 14-15 sitting on the wall outside our house with him when he had ran from school and they couldnt get him back in, had no key so we both had to wait for my mother to come home, normaly at 3pm and we could have been there 3 hrs, no one seemed to care, and I lost a lot of school days taking care of him (10 years older) which resulted in me leaving school without sitting any exams,
My brother is still ADHD only he has got better in adulthood, although my mother did not, he still gets up on a morning about 5-5-30am whatever time he went to bed, and he now works with our older brother who has a scaffolding business, im told he will work, lifting and carring poles and planks of wood all day and just keep going, sometimes wish i had just half of his energy lol!, but no, this is not IMO something that you just simply grow out of as you get older..Gc
