Just Joined - Anyone Here Had A Run In With Joys Sewing Machines?
Hi all, just found this site and hoping it will be of use in helping me get a refund for a £240 sewing machine that I bought from Joys International Sewing Machines, or JSM Distributor, depending on which web page you read. I returned the machine because it dod not do what I needed it to do, ie, embroider letters onto fabric (I was very very specific to the sales lady about what I needed it for, and have emails to back everything up), and they are refusing to refund me.
They also offer "Free Gifts" with a purchase, in my case they stated that the value of the "Free" gifts was £260. When I started the returns proceedure, itself a nightmare of unreturned calls and emails, I saw to my horror that they were attaching all manner of unreasonable conditions to any return, one of them being that the "Free" gifts were Non Returnable (!) and that I would be charged for them, and that their value would be deducted from amy refund !!!!!!!!! Can you believe it????
Anyway, I got over that one by citing Unfair Contract law at them, and they haven't charged me for them, but they are still refusing to refund me. I've been in touch with Trading Standards, who suggest I do a standard "pay up by this date or else" letter (which is fine, I used to be a credit controller, so I've taken loads of people to the small claims court, and can easily do a 7 day noice letter), but I have breast cancer, and frankly can do without the hassle of all this. I'm nearly at the end of my chemo, and about to go into radiotherapy, which will wipe me out, so I'd really like to get some help with this. I've contacted Suneil on the Get Dom post, so fingers crossed.
Anyone out there had any dealings with this joke of a company?
Re: Just Joined - Anyone Here Had A Run In With Joys Sewing Machines?
Hi angel153 and welcome to CAG. I have not had any dealing with this specific company, however under The Sale of Goods Act (SOGA) 1979 you can reject the goods as not fit for the purpose. SOGA specifies that the goods "must be fit for any specific or particular purpose made known to the seller at the time of the agreement." You should state this in your pay up or else letter.
It is their responsibility to make sure they supplied you with the goods you had specified you needed.
How long was it after purchasing the sewing machine that you returned it?
Re: Just Joined - Anyone Here Had A Run In With Joys Sewing Machines?
Hi,
A mere 14 days - well within the 6 month limit as per SOGA! It would have been sooner, but I had chemo on the Friday which meant the courier had to be put off until the Monday, then they took 2 days to deliver instead of one. Plus, they gave me the run around when I ramg up and asked to return it - took a lot of phone calls and emails just to get a returns number (machines not accepted back without returns number) And then their returns line was a premium rate number, so I told them they could ring me instead!
Do you think there would be a problem in my having ticked the "30 day money back" box on the returns label, as opposed to the "Faulty" box? I didn't know at the time that Unfit For Purpose falls under SOGA's Faulty definition. Mind you, having spoken to an ebay buyer of one of their machines, which was hugely faulty, and the company admitted it was faulty, but then they said that particular fault wasn't covered under their guarantee - so they'll evidently try to wriggle out of anything, anyway they can. Bunch of dishonest, dishonourable, disrespectful eejits.

No, the fact that isn't fit for the specific purpose that you stated you needed it for is sufficient.
Hopefully you'll get a response from Suneil or Joys (there's a certain irony in their name) will finally get their act together and refund you. Remember if you do need to file at court you don't need to turn up for the actual case bearing in mind your current health situation and it is highly unlikely that they would be able to enter any sort of defence.
Re: Just Joined - Anyone Here Had A Run In With Joys Sewing Machines?
That's good to know, thankyou Rory. I think Joys (agree about the irony therein!) would be the ones to not turn up, they don't seem to be an honorable sort of company at all, so I doubt they'd even bother to show up. If none of us show up, the magistrate will be a bit lonely! I don't mind going in as long as I'm well enough that day. If they DID turn up, it would please me greatly to see their faces when the ruling goes against them ;-)
Re: Just Joined - Anyone Here Had A Run In With Joys Sewing Machines?
I really can't fathom this sort of attitude from a company. The 'free' gifts are obviously 'not free' and their price is incorporated into the the sale price of the machine, so they are loosing nothing. If the machine was unused then they can just sell it again at full price or if used then offer it as a 'demonstration' machine at a reduced price and maybe attract other buyers into the shop for such an offer that could purchase other things as well so making up for any loss in profit and of course they wont have to give the free gifts with that.

Re: Just Joined - Anyone Here Had A Run In With Joys Sewing Machines?
hi angel153,
sorry to hear your not well and send my best wishes to you. i have had the same problem with joys sewing machines over the last 4 weeks permanent hassle, i had two machines both delivered with dangerous electrical faults eventally returned and they own me £386 to which i have seen non of it, i am currently getting a list of customers and there complaints together so i can do something about them, they are really making my life stressfull so god knows what its doing to you ! they really are con men/women and need to be put a stop to. i emailed watchdog yesterday so if you want to do that as well they might listed if several of us get to gether. i am also preparing list of unhappy customers for ebay ( as this is where my goods came from ) so they get taken off there. and then my next step is to inform trading standards.
i feel strongly on this issue as the faults my machine had could of caused a fire or an electric shock which could of resulted in serious injury or worse ! if you want to email me with a full run down if your feeling up to it, to :- (edit)
and anyone else out there with similar problems with joys present or in the pas please feel free to email me to with your complaints.

Re: Just Joined - Anyone Here Had A Run In With Joys Sewing Machines?
Hi Angeie,
Happy to email you with what I emailed both Watchdog, Suneil, and the Trading Standards Office - Suneil kept me waiting for more than two weeks for a decision as to whether they were going to put it in the programme, and then decided not to - I was preparing a standard 7 day letter when he expressed interest in this case, so I held off on that because if I'd done the 7 day letter and they paid me back, then Suneil's team wouldn't have had a programme, so I'm a tad annoyed by that. Watchdog sent me a standard reply back and I've heard nothing since (over a month ago), and Trading Standards just recommend taking them to court. I had hoped they would step in, but no.
Don't know how to email you through this site, but my email is cyberbabe153 at hotmail dot com.
Thanks for your post, nice to know I'm not the only one!
Best wishes,
Angel.
Re: Just Joined - Anyone Here Had A Run In With Joys Sewing Machines?
hi all - just joined this site. Decided to see if anyone else out there was having problems with Joys...at least Im not the only one!
Well, I ordered 2 industrial sewing machines, iron and vacuum table. The next day delivery promise is a joke! It took over a week to get 3 items then about another week to get the last one. After about 2 weeks my vacuum table stopped working - and everytime I tried to turn it on, the electrics in my whole flat went out! Luckily my partner is an electrical engineer so he fix their wiring faults!
About 2 weeks ago my iron and boiler stopped working and just started spillling water from the bottom...very dangerous considering my sockets were underneath! I sent an email about 2 weeks ago for them to collect it - no one replied so I've been phoning about twice a day since then. It was 'supposed' to be collected 2 days ago and I stayed in all day (9am-6pm) no one came for it. I called them yesterday morning but was told I would be called back. I called last night and was told there was no one there that could help and that they would call in the morning. No one called this morning so I called them (about 3 times). I was told that it was being collected today (even though this was not arranged with me). They gave me a business post ref number to contact business post myself to arrange a collection. When I called business post they said that the number I had been given had too many numbers in it! I called Joys back but of course by this time there was no one there to talk to and the dispatch system was closed! Ive been told to call back tomorrow.....
Im soooooo annoyed with this company and would advise people to think twice before ordering - cheap is definately not cheerful! I would actually just like a refund for the iron and boiler unit - I didnt get any free gifts so they can use that one on me! Does anyone think its worth the energy to try for a refund or should I just wash my hands of them?! Im desperate for the iron as Im self employed and this rubbish is costing me valuable work time...and un-needed stress! They are disgusting!
Re: Just Joined - Anyone Here Had A Run In With Joys Sewing Machines?
Hi
I am currently in dispute with Joys regarding return of a "repaired" item.
It took over 6 weeks to get a returns number, which they insist on before you return an item. Eventually we took it down ourselves for repair.
4 weeks later and we still dont have it back.
I rang to ask them to send it back and they refused saying they dont have a box for it to be returned in so I would have to collect it myself.
Now I am trying to speak to someone to make sure it is actually repaired and ready to collect.
I spoke with trading standards about them refusing to return it and they said I can claim expenses (fuel, motor costs and employees wages for duration of journey to-from work to collect).
I cannot speak with anyone on the phone, main office number refuse to put you through, they refuse to give a geographical number (their 0906 number is 50p a minute) and they do not answer their emails.
Any advice anyone? I have everything in place to get to the small claims court but I need my heat press now.
Re: Just Joined - Anyone Here Had A Run In With Joys Sewing Machines?
Hi all,I am too having problems with JSM,Only last week i took delivery of a PF5318 Walking foot sewing machine,I too have had nothing but problems and not even up & running with yet, why?,Because i have had problems from the date of puchase,Friday30th September,Iwas informed that i would receive email on date of purchase & another on the following monday to tell me i would receive delivery on the Tuesday,Neither arrived,I called them on the monday they said i would have to call them back tuesday morning which i did,to be told what i can only describe as a fob off ,they called me back to say that the machine i had purchased was on another lorry going in the other direction to my delivery address,They would therefore be sending out a brand new Machine(the ladys words) that i would receive on the wednesday 1st oct.
I had employed a local engineer to assemble it & so we began, all ok until fitting the oil sump, rubber cushions would not fit,so i called them with the problem & they sent me new cushions,They said would be delivered following day, they did'nt,they arrived on the saturday,Still wrong so called them again nothing they could do until the following monday morning w 6th oct when an engineer would call me regarding the problem,He would call me at 8am,I waited until 11am,when i got fed up of waiting i called them,i was informed that they would call me back,I was then told that still i had not got the right cushions they would send me more, another day wasted another day i would not be able to do my job, yesterday the 7th,still the wrong part so i was asked by the Engineer if i could photograph the problem & he would be able to work out the problem which i did,i was also informed that if the oil sump did'nt sit high enough to put cardboard underneath the corners it would then raise it enough so that i could open the bobbin case when the machine was placed on top,So i sent the pictures to him via multimedia to be told i needed more rubber cushions that wer'ent sent with the machine,I am now awaiting a call regarding my machine being returned for a refund,I am like you all that have had a problem with them just so so so dissapointed,Thoroughly disgusted with the attitude of the people on the other end of the phone, watch this space,It was not until i approached another company about it that i did more research & found your page,I am thinking of making the journey to the warehouse its a long way but they are not going to keep our hard earned money, oooooooooooo i am so mad.
Re: Just Joined - Anyone Here Had A Run In With Joys Sewing Machines?
Hi
I too am experiencing a run in with Joys or JSM or the invisible sewing machine company. I purchased a middle of the range machine which broke completely half way through a project, only under 3 months old. The same story can be repeated as most others who have posted comments on this site. I really dont have the time to mess about with this type of thing, or the finances. I just want to know how to get my money back. I would, however like to send them a 7 day notice, but have been told they work from two containers on a farm? What happens then ? Surely with this many complaints someone can take action to remove their advertising from the web !! The last time I purchased a sewing machine was over 20 years ago, because they just dont break if they are any good.
I need help with my letter, and help with small claim and some kind of idea of timescales. thanks DIVADOT

Re: Just Joined - Anyone Here Had A Run In With Joys Sewing Machines?
Joys sewing machines probably have the poorest reputation of any sewing machine supplier in the UK. May I suggest you contact a few reputable local sewing machine suppliers and ask their opinion about Joys sewing machines. You will quickly find that every supplier you ring can tell you just how poor joys are.
The majority of Joys sewing machines were sold via the major online auction site and if you check the reviews on the auction site; you will find many horror stories and warnings. Joys appear to have recently stopped selling on the auction site and it’s possible they were forced off. The adverts stated “you can not buy cheaper” but it would be better if it said you can not buy cheaper and poorer quality.
The goods they sell are under the brand names of Joys, Yamata and Feiyue. The goods appear to be manufactured by China Feiyue Sewing machine group
If you do a web check on the manufacturer, you will see the manufacturers have been in financial crisis since June and some report that they have gone out of business.
The Joys brand and Yamata brand are known by the sewing industry as possibly the poorest quality sewing machine on offer in the UK.
If you have a problem you should contact trading standards, better to contact the department which is closest to the supplier, as it’s likely they will already be dealing with other complaints. Its also well worth you using the small claims court; don’t be afraid as its simple to do and if you have been ripped off, then assert your legal right to be treated fairly.
Also tell everyone and post everywhere about your experience.
Re: Just Joined - Anyone Here Had A Run In With Joys Sewing Machines?
I've fallen into the trap of buying a rubbish machine from Joys . After 5 weeks they've just managed to send me a returns number. And they want 25 quid for the 'free' return which I"m obviously not going to send them.
Where should I go from here? Should I just tell them I'm not sending them any more money and go straight to the small claims court?
Advice from all you wise people would be appreciated!

Re: Just Joined - Anyone Here Had A Run In With Joys Sewing Machines?
I phoned up JSM and purchased an embroidery machine from them at the end of Jan. It arrived on 1st Feb no problems. I paid 300 pounds by credit card.
Over the next two months I tried it a number of times, never could get it to work, didn't really think about it - just assumed it was a tempermental machine and that I was doing something wrong. Eventually my OH suggested I get it serviced. Took it to my local sewing machine repair man who said the timing was so far out it would never work, and to cut a long story short it was faulty under the Sale of Goods Act 1979 and I should ask for a refund.
On 1st April I e-mailed JSM. They replied that day saying I should call their service dept for a 'returns number' on 6th April (it was easter so bank holidays). Called on 6th April, they took my e-mail address, said a returns number would be with me by the end of the day. It wasn't.
12th April, sent recorded delivery letter saying would take them to small claims court if no response. Post Office confirms was delivered.
No response, sent a 2nd recorded delivery letter on 22nd April. Got an e-mail expressing surprise as they had 'never had any further contact from me after machine delivered'.
Finally after lots of e-mails too-ing and fro-ing have got the fabled 'returns number' today. In the accompanying e-mail states that i must send them 25 pounds to cover the cost of the courier to return the machine. This is despite them stating free returns etc.
I am loath to do this as I feel it is throwing good money after bad.
Can I start the small claims court process now or should I pursue returning the machine? Having read other forums, I have no confidence that anyone who has returned a machine to this company has got any further than having no money or machine.
Also, e-mail today from company is talking about repairs where I have specifically and repeatedly stated I want a refund.
Re: Just Joined - Anyone Here Had A Run In With Joys Sewing Machines?
Joys are a nightmare to deal with,I had big problems with them,i was advised to call Trading Standards which i did,They advised to Call the credit card company to get the money refunded,Be careful when you send the item back because i also had problems with them accepting the delivery even with a returns number,Be persistent Keep copies of every correspondence, verbal, wri ttenDates & times, note everything down & if they keep messing around then take further action.
Trading Standards will help & the more people that report this company the more likely they will either Shape up or ship out,If you are expected to pay for the return & it is stated that it is free,Bill them,But Honestly Trading Standards Before you do anything else,As other posts have stated It was not Fit for Purpose therefore You Have every right to recoup ALL funds laid out by you,Good luck,x
