I went on to my Egg account online last night to get a reminder of my PIN number and was told to telephone them. I had all access to my statement information so didn't think there was anything wrong with my account. I have been told by their collections team that my account has been closed since March 07 and it is for repayment only. I haven't been using the card so never noticed this but I have been making payments. I have never been informed in writing so it was news to me that they closed the account.
What I'm wondering is - if they have closed the account should they be charging interest?
Egg seem to have a habit of doing things without any warning. It may be worth sending them an e-mail requesting that they cease adding interest as you are no longer allowed to use the account and see what their reply is.
I'm midway through the tunnel, but getting closer to the light.
So Egg are saying that the account is not closed. It just has a note on it to say that its to be closed as soon as the balance is cleared. It cant be used either.
Are they allowed to do this. I feel that paying interest is a service of an active credit card they shouldn't be allowed to keep adding it if they are providing no service surely?
Unfortunately adding interest seems to be something that banks can do regardless of whether accounts can be used or not. I'm dealing with the same issue with an overdraft. My OH's MBNA had a 'withdrawn line of credit' for years - so he couldn't use the card, but they still added interest and charges.
Having said all that, it doesn't mean you can't keep trying to negotiate with them.
How long have you had the card? I was wondering if they will have a valid credit agreement - if they didn't this could be grounds for negotiation.
I'm midway through the tunnel, but getting closer to the light.
They do have a valid agreement. Everything is on it.
I dont want to use the card again but I dont think they should be charging me repeated interest for nothing. Quick question I am going to claim back charges and PPI. For the charges can I only claim the difference between their charge and £12?
