Hi there! I am new to this site....found you by typing in DLC in google...appears to be a great site, thank you to all that run & contribute.
I have a little problem which I am hoping I can get some advice on...I have a debt with Egg which I have had for approx 5years - I called them (5 yrs ago) to let them know that I was unable to pay as I was unemployed - this was ignored and they kept sending me reminders which I would call and tell them again that I was un-employed and unable to pay. I then left the country to go and work in Australia (new job, relocation package). I have been out of the UK for 5 years now.
Approx 9 months ago my mother (who still lives in the UK) started to get letters & in recent weeks a phone - all addressed to me. Requesting for the debt to be paid. I do not know how they have got her details as the debt was never registered at her address. My mother has given them my email, postal address and telephone number to contact me, but as of yet they have not made contact with me, just my mother.
I have recently moved to New Zealand where I am again unemployed - seeking work.
My question is...what can be done to stop the DLC harrassing my mother & can they chase the debt in New Zealand? Should I make myself bankrupt in the UK?
What we always say in a case like this is first of all make sure that the debt is enforceable by sending a request off for a copy of the agreement. (N in the templates section). It will cost £1 and don't sign anything. (important) I would suggest sending the letter off to the lender via your mother so she can put in a £1 postal order. There's also a harrassment letter that can be sent too on the templates section.
