Please can somebody help???

I have a pre payment meter for my Gas & Electricity (I put money on a card that goes into the meter)... I have now been told that there is a fault on my gas meter and I now owe them >£1000. icon_surprised.gif

They have not read my meter in more than a year and so this fault has been there since at least August 2005 when the meter was replaced.

As they haven't read my meter I have received no account statements either - surely they should send statements regularly? Does anybody know what is the minimum frequency for meter reading??? Do they have a duty of care to keep you informed of your account etc.?

They have said that I need to repay this but can't afford to pay it all in one go!

Any advice...

Thanks for the advice... can they cut me off in the mean time?

Or file a CCJ for the monies??? - just spent the last year cleaning up my credit file and don't want to jeopardise this as looking to buy a house in the next 6 months or so.

Surely, a pre-payment means you pay before you can use and a faulty meter is their fault and not mine?

I switched from BG to NPower a couple of years ago for both gas and leccy and received a combined bill for over 700 quid!

I queried this as i was prepay on meters and couldn't fathom as to why i had ran up such a debt. Without argument i got a response explaining it was there fault for not updating the meters and they wiped the debt off and compensated me £25.

Don't threaten them with nasty letters but do write to them and explain your situation. It worked for me.
