Default B*rclays STILL debiting closed account

    Hi,
Not sure where this post goes, so I apologise if this is the wrong board.

I closed my current account (with MUCH glee) in my local branch, just checked my online banking, and Friday they debited/took nearly £400 worth of standing orders, despite this account having been "closed" for over a month.

Barclaysicon gave me an "exit interview" took my cheque book and debit card, and assured me my current account would then be closed and all standing orders would be cancelled.

Do I have any legal comeback with regards to paying this amount back?

    Regards,
    Andy

Where are the payments going? Presumably, they are still making payments you instructed them to, which is still going to the same accounts.

Do you have it in writing that the account was closed? Legal comeback always relies on evidence. It would be hard to say you aren't liable for these payments, which you instructed the bank to make, unless you can show you rescinded those instructions on the account being closed.

Have you spoken to them about it yet? May be a straightforward mistake...

Just to add, I phoned the account helpline, and they have NO record of my account being closed.......

    I am now beyond anger.

No, unfortunately I have no paperwork from Barclaysicon to say my account closure was actioned.

I know which member of the branch staff I spoke too, hopefully it is a straightforward error.

What is more annoying, the payments are being made in respect of settled credit cards! :O

    Andy

They should be able to do what is called a BACS recall, I think? If not, just get the company the payments have gone to to send them back.

Seems an easy thing to sort out, if everyone cooperates and admits their mistake that is. Try your branch first, if you know them, but Barclaysicon have dispute teams centrally, so they may not be able to help.
