i hope someone can help 2 years ago i signed up with aol for internet access and about the same time a subcribed to time magazine both for 12 months.as it turned out i did not need the internet service so i tried to contact aol and cancell they said i had signed a 12 month contract and that was that ok i thought and left it 12 months and tried a gain to cancell with no luck i know i thought aol were taking money from my debit card wich was just about to expire so i thought that if i didnt give them my new card number that was that but Lloyds did give them my new card number so i closed that account with lloys only to discover that lloyds have given them details of my other account with them is this legal?
Hi Nathan, welcome, and hope that the CAG can offer you some advice! I have had similar problems with AOL/Lloyds, which was due to something called a "continuous authority", by paying with your debit card, rather than direct debit. AOL continued to claim the money from a debit card which had expired, but Lloyds just kept paying them from the new card. This is an awful way to pay bills, and very difficult to stop!
What we did was to write to AOL and Lloyds. To AOL we explained that we had cancelled our subscription, and that they should not have charged our card. They blamed the bank, however they did pay us a substantial GOGW, totalling around half of what was taken. With Lloyds, we formally complained and Lloyds basically blamed AOL. We have taken this further with the fos, but Lloyds did also refund some of the money. We closed the account, and banked elsewhere. I am not 100% sure of how the law stands with this method of payment?
In summary, I would complain in writing to Lloyds and AOL, make sure that you write complaint on top of the letter, and to send the letters recorded. Ask for your money back since the point where you know that you cancelled AOL.

AOL did the same with me and for a year continued to take money and the bank kept saying they could not stop it.
I just got £125 back a week ago though!
I went through to their cancellation team. Argued profusely that I had not used the account for 12 months!! They verified it and actually said, you havent used it for 14 months! silly people.
Anyway, cancellations immediately cancelled everything and gave me a 3 month refund. Cancellation can only refund 3 months in full they said. I then wrote to AOL to the complaints department and within 4 weeks got the money reveresed on my card, they still are arguing bank charges but got some back.
So while time consuming, phone the main number and go through to cancellations and argue your point and demand to speak to a supervisor for an immediate 3 months refund of payment. It took 21 days for it to recredit into my account.
Worth doing though! Lets hope I get back 3 lots of bank charges for it!
I pay AOL by Halifax debit card and when my card expired I had an alert from AOL to update by card. Halifax have been really good concerning payments I make by D/D. My personal view is that Lloyds are in the wrong and I agree that an Official Complaint to Lloyds worded very strongly is warranted.
