Default Thomson : Advice Needed Please

Hi ok this might be a long one but I'll keep it as short as I can.
I booked a Skiing holidayicon for 12 people to Andorra leaving in Jan 2008. The cost worked out at £418 per person. In October 2 of the people were struggling to raise the money needed to pay off their part of the remaining balance. I rang the travel agent (Thomson) to see what would happen if we canceled their 2 places. So the travel agent rang Thomson ski and they said the only thing that would happen is that the 2 people canceling would lose their deposits and that would be it everyone else would still be paying £418 per person.
So with that we decided that it would be easier to just cancel the 2 places than to find 2 replacements and the 2 people dropping out weren't bothered about losing their deposits so all was well.
I collected the money off of everyone went and paid the balance off that we owed and that should have been the end of it.
The next day I got a phone callicon from the travel agent saying that if we cancel the 2 places we lose our group booking discount and the price will go up. Infact the price would go up more than it would have cost the remaining 10 of us to chip in and pay for the 2 canceled between us.
The travel agent said she had told Thomson ski to not put the cancellations through until she had talked to me because obviously I had been told the price wouldn't change and now that wasn't the case. When she rang me it was late and she said it would be better if I could come into the shop the next day and sort it out so thats what I did.
I went in the following morning and she rang Thomson Ski back up to which they said they had a fax through from the travel agent saying that we wanted the places canceling so they have canceled them and there is nothing they can do now and we had to pay and extra £695 where as if we had chipped in and paid the 2 places off between ourselves it would have only been £400.
They only reason we canceled the places was because we were told the price wouldn't change otherwise we would have got replacements. Anyway I had to pay the £695 otherwise they said they would have no choice but to cancel the holiday and we would all lose our deposits of roughly £200 per person.
The travel agent told me to send a letter to Thomson Ski complaining about this and fact that I had been lied to by them and also say that I would write into Watchdog if they didn't either give us back the 2 places or refund us the money so that the price was back to £418. I did that and got a reply on Saturday saying basically there is nothing they can do and they have done nothing wrong.
So i rang them up took ages to get through and the lady said she would put me on hold while she looks into it. After about half and hour being on hold she hung up on me!!!!!
I rang Thomson Ski again today and they said they could only talk about my booking with the travel agent because of the data protection act. So I went down to the travel agent and got them to ring them. They said unless we have proof that Thomson rang Thomson Ski up and told them not to cancel the 2 places there is nothing they can do.
The travel agent did have proof but they said that wasn't good enough.
Everytime the travel agent does something on a booking they have to log it into the booking notes for that booking so on my booking its there the time they rang the day and who they spoke too and what they said which was don't cancel the 2 places until we have spoken to the customer.
Thomson ski don't think that is enough evidence and are refusing to do anything about it though.
So the travel agent has told me to send them another letter which I know will get me no where so I was wondering if anyone has any advice to offer on another route to proceed down because I'm just going round in circles here.
