    Angry Council tax refund

    Hi all,

    As some of you already know, my house was unoccupied last year for about 7 months - I read that I could claim the council tax back that I had paid and phoned the council - they confirmed this and said 'send us proof'.

    So, I sent a copy of the initial survey where it stated that the house was damaged too much to live in, and sent them a letter from the builder stating when the house was in a state of repair that it could be inhabited once again.

    After 10 weeks, I phoned them to ask what's going on, and they just blatently said, "yeah, it's not very good is it?" I replied that it wasn't!!

    I've just phoned them again, and they are completely disinterested, despite acknowledging that they owe me the money.

    Suggestions on a postcard?

    Ask what their complaints procedure is and advise if not fully rectified to your satisfaction by the end of the day, you want to go down that route.

    If they refuse for it to go down their complaints route, involve the local government Ombudsmanicon.

    If they try to fob you off or don't tell you, ask to speak to the council's CEO's secretary - that way they'll know you mean business

    Take the name of whoever you speak to, their position.
    Also ask for their superviser's name and their position.

    You might like to investigate The Council Tax (chargeable Dwellings) Order 1992 for the legislation.

    If your "Dwelling" is vacant requiring, or undergoing major repairs or alterations you can have exemption for upto 12 months. In addtion, exemptions can certainly be backdated and their is no time limit and no "good cause" required.
