Default Excessive Charges Advice ?

Could you perhaps give me a little advice?

I’ve been with a number of banks over the past 5 years or so (IF.com, RBoS, A&L). I’ve left them after excessive bank charges almost crippled my finances. After leaving If.com, I requested a copy of my account using the DP act – the total amount applied over 2 years was almost £2000. They also disclosed to me that they had in fact lied on the phone with me, telling me that no charges were pending, but “I didn’t reveal the pending charges in order to keep the customer calm and happy” said an agent’s log entry.

Anyway, my new provider is Alliance and Leicester – I thought I’d give them a go. Having just returned from a 3 week holidayicon, I found 7 letters telling me about charges being applied.

6 x £34 for missed DD’s
2 x £50 for going overdrawn for more than 5 days.

What’s worse, is that I didn’t even use my card abroad !!

After discovering this, I phoned them to find out what was going on – basically, DD’s that had bounced on their due date, were then later attempted – doubling the fees.

I spoke with Customer Service who basically said she was sorry, and she’d refund 1 of the £34 charges – she then passed me to credit control to try and get my account back in to shape. They were quite rude to be honest, I was given three options.
•
To close the account, and make overdrafticon repayment arrangements with haste
Pay the £300 in charges immediately to prevent a further £50 being charged on the 20th June
• Wait until payday (28th June) by which time my salary will be less £300 of charges, plus the £50 due on the 20th June

And that was that – no offer of advice, just make a choice and be done with it.

Obviously this is something that not only I am experiencing.

Can you offer any advice at all?

Many thanks!

Right in short all is not lost.

You are in the right place (though your thread isn't, so I am moving it to the A and L forum for now).

Have a good read around. Especially the FAQs and guidance notes - as well as other threads pertinent to your situation and your banks.

Your money. Your claim.

Various steps to follow - such as DPA requests (I see you already have one from IF so you can get the ball rolling when you have read through the sections I have already mentioned).

Start threads in the appropriate forums relating to your claims. I will get back to you with regards a comment about your IF DPA disclosure - as I am quite interested by the implication...

Good luck for now.

Question Re: Excessive Charges Advice ?

Could someone please enlighten me - i've been having a good read around re excessive charges. But, from what I can make out the legal process only provides for excessive unauthorised overdrafticon charging.

My problem is actually with missed DD charges.... 6 x £35 :o

Can anyone advise on these for me ?

No, the same applies, they are also penalty charges and the law applies to all penalty charges
