    Default National Broadband Speedfinder project - beta

    Which? recently did a survey of about 300 Broadband customers and found that actual speeds were not as advertised.

    We thought that we try and produce a map of speed based on post codes and providers so that people could actually find out what they were likely t get before making their choice and putting their money down.

    Here is the beta. It needs testing and lots of comments please.

    It may also be that if people find that there are consistently lower speeds than advertised for their area, that they may have a claim against the provider

    Is the result skewed in any way where a user is on a wireless router?

    Yeah I saw you were only getting about 4Mb/sec.

    It'd depend on the speed of the wireless link, although the standards are 11Mb and 54Mb I believe ... so they shouldn't be a limiting factor on an 8Mb line

    There are two laptops running at the same time off the same router - again, would this affect it?

    Not really, assuming the other laptop wasn't using a lot of bandwidth. Your 8Mb is available to share over both laptops (it's not a case of the router allocating 4Mb for each machine).

    I'll add these points to the FAQ

    Did you click the second link under 'the broadband survey' menu on the left of the page? After you enter your postcode, it should perform the data and show you the results

    Odd:

    The CAGicon speedtest gave me an average of 3.79 Mb/s, whilst BTs own BTSpeedtest gave me 2.45 Mb/s...and all on a service that is supposed to provide close to 8 Mb/s...but I have gone off on this one many times before...

    How do you get the links to the most recent posts on the bottom left?

    I have tried to do this here: CIDB.net - The Consumer Information Database but whilst I can pull back the thread title, I have no idea how to get the URL.

    Also, what can you do if your speed is consistently lower than advertised (as mine seems to be!)?

    Here's the code that I used Dave:

    Code:
    $oldest = time() - (3600 * 24 * 14); ### 14 days ago

    $r1 = mysql_query("select threadid, title from cagthread where (forumid=115 or forumid=56 or forumid=63) and title not like '%forsale%' and dateline > $oldest order by rand() limit 0,10; ");

    while (list($threadid, $title) = mysql_fetch_row($r1)) {

    print "<a class=\"subcategory1\" href=\"http://www.consumeractiongroup.co.uk/forum/showthread.php?t=$threadid\">$title</a><br><div
    style=\"height:7px\"></div>";
    }

    --------------------------

    I've tested the capacity of the CAGicon server from another dedicated server in the UK. I got a consistent 10Mb/sec, so the CAGicon server can certainly send at 8Mb/sec. Not sure whether the 10Mb peak was due to limits on CAG's bandwidth or on Rack Space's (the company that the other server is with).

    I think we'll have to warn people on connections over 10Mb that there are so many limiting factors (send speed of CAG, speed of intermediate networks), that the results won't be too reliable. That said, someone on a 20Mb line should still get 10Mb for our test. At least the fact that Spice's BT test was slow too helps to validate our results.
