    Angry Congestion charge

    Visited by two bailiffsicon yesterday.

We are under threat of eviction due to mortgageicon arrears and just when we really did not need it, bailiffsicon came yesterday to enforce payment of a congestion charge from last September. We had visited London for the day an I genuinely believed you paid the charge when you retuned home - you get a bill through the post. Of course now I know that this is not the case and the £8 charge became £512!

Is there anything I can do?

Didn't all the signs before you entered London give it away?

I must not have been taking much notice. As I said, I understood that you could pay later. This has happened to others I know, especially people who don't live in the capital and might not be totally familiar with the process.

I don't live in London but I drive down the M1 and M25 at least once a week and you can't miss the signs about the congestion charge and the fact that you have to pay etc. (And I'm not even travelling to London, just going in that sort of direction - but the warnings are well in advance and there's plenty of them).

With the greatest respect, if you can't understand road signs then you should not be in charge of a motor vehicle.

Did you let the bailiffsicon in? Whether or not you did can be crucial in cases such as these. It may still be possible to salvage the situation.

Suggest you go here and do some reading, This is an excellent charitable organisation that offers a wealth of advice, including comprehensive information on dealing with bailiffs (I'm assuming you're in England/Wales, there's also a Scottish section.

Perhaps there's a way through this for you - I truly hope so, given the situation you're already in.
    ( edit )

I live in London myself and have forgotten to pay on occasion, and understand how confusing the payment options can be for non-Londoners. Unfortunately 'Führer' Livingstone doesn't think that way so you'll need to act quickly to get it sorted. Good Luck.

I'm merely a country bumpkin - the last time I was in London by car was 15 years ago. I stayed with friends and my car was parked in their Mews lane all the time. Long before congestion charges came in. I'm not sure that I would understand the congestion charges signs, either, but I'm sure as hell competent to drive a motor vehicle - just ask the Institute of Advanced Motorists!

Whether or not you are competent to drive a motor vehicle or not - doesn't help solve your problem, though. I think Macboy has the answer.

Meanwhile, for other non-Londoners reading this cautionary tale of how, through the authoritarianism, avarice and power-lust of one little man, with a supporting cast of a not-fit-for-purpose legal system and greedy, bullying goons; £8 might just turn into over £500 for you - visit this site before you come down and know your options.
