Hello! Hope someone can help me! I haven't used banks at all since 9/11. Now I want to open a savings acct. so I can cash my payroll check without a $5 charge. This bank ( a Bank One) says their credit system will not allow them to open any kind of acct. for me. I can't seem to pin them down on any details - but the manager hinted around that the fact that I don't owe anybody anything was probably the reason. The only other thing I can think of is that I have some unknown charge imposed by a bank(s) I used in the long ago past has some charges like a service chg. that I never paid thinking my acct. was closed. I don't know. I do not have a good credit rating from long past mistakes but don't understand why I can't even open a SAVINGS acct. I am forced to pay cash for everything and now the the internet I want to be able to buy online and have to use my daughters credit card to do it. How can I fix this - the bank is no help at all. I am 52 years old and can't even open a savings account! What is wrong with this picture. Everything I own is paid for and it seems that I am being damned for it! Thanks for any help provided. Paulyc
This is quite a common problem, sometimes you can't get credit because you don't have a history, and you can't get a history because you can't get credit! It's all a bit mad really - life is, in general. I am surprised however, that you cannot get a basic savings account. You are no threat to any bank if you cannot go overdrawn................ whatever your history! I would suggest trying another place - Nationwide, etc - building societies. I think all you need is proof of who you are - passport or driving licence. I may be wrong and am happy to be corrected, but that is what I would do. Best of luck!
I am not sure we can help very much due to the fact you are in USA and this site is based in UK.
I would advise the best thing for you to do is go to a citizens advice centre (if you have them they will be in your telephone directories) and they will be able to help you.
Sorry I couldnt be any more help
