Written by John Kruse, one of the leading experts on Bailiff Law, this consumer friendly guide is essential reading for anyone who comes into contact with a bailiff.
The book is easy to understand and clearly explains the rights
a bailiff has, and also what they cannot do when collecting debts and repossessing goods etc.
Being given the run-around by local council - what's new?
We moved into building mid-2006 on site with about ten units. Owner had whole site reassessed in Sept 2005 by valuation office with a view to renting out separate units. As small unit we should have been entitled to 50% small business relief but council have insisted that as property wasn't on the rating register in April 2006 (their fault entirely as whole site was assessed in Nov 2005) we are not entitled.
However they backed down from magistrates court this morning as friend of mine told me they have the power to back-date the registration and we spent most of yesterday sending faxes - theirs cancelling the hearing arrived at 4.49pm. They have admitted that we are right and it can be back dated - (absolute pratts - I don't know how you are supposed to run a small business in this country). However these people are just so deliberately cryptic they will not tell us how we go about it.
So the question is, does anyone know how you back date a rating assessment?
It's OK - the council have agreed to back date it without us having to do anything - seems too many official people will have to get involved if we put in an appeal and their cock up would be out in the open.
