Is it legal for banks to pass your personal information on, if they sell your debt to a debt collector for example, without your written prior approval? I am sorry if this sounds a dumb question but to me it seems relevant.

I must say this is by no means a definative answer, but it is my belief that they are entitled to under those circumstances (selling a debt).

It is not necessarily the case otherwise, so if there is another reason you are asking, it would be pertinent to say so.

Thxs for the reply jonni2bad. I was just curious after having read all the faq's & the bit about the D.P.A. Afterall it is your own personal info they are dealing with & you usually sign declarations for most of these things nowadays.

If you go on to the Information Commissioner's website, you can do a search of the company and have a look at their Declaration, which basically states what they intend to do with your information. You can be pretty sure that they will have included the fact that they may pass on your details to third parties for the purpose of debt collection.
