Credit checks are also commonly required; landlords have to protect themselves from risk of losses the best way they can.
I am afraid your word (about your financial history or capability), without disrespect, it's just not good enough in a business sense.
As for excessive charge; it was your choice to go with the agency that charges £30. I know that "choice" was probably limited, still, you were not forced. If you were to search in your locality, you may have found cheaper option or, more probably, that all agents charge similar amount.
So, all in all, nothing unfair or unreasonable here.
