damage to external wall

Hello
I am writing on behalf of a friend who does not have computer access.

She lived in a shared rented property which had a large driveway. Some damage was caused to the wall of the driveway by some cars reversing in the driveway. Neither they or the landlord knows who caused the damage but the landlord is trying to take £300 of the deposit for the repair. Is this right? I thought that external structures were the landlords responsibility. They moved in before the tenancy deposit scheme came in force so they cannot go to dispute resolution

He is not entitled to deduct this because they are the tenant.

He MAY be able to claim from them because they are liable for the damage(i.e. through their negligence they caused it), but this has nothing to do with the damage deposit(as you say, landlords are responsibile for the structure), and also he would have to prove it was their negligence, which from the sound of it he cannot do, as it wasnt them,
