Ozzywizard,

As it is your own home there is no legal requirement to have a gas safety check.

However, it is advisable to have the boiler serviced each year to run efficiently and save you money on fuel usage. I had my boiler serviced by a local Corgi gas man - Yellow Pages (yell.com) - cost ~£75 + parts if required. Ask the cost when ringing around. Costs could increase if your have individual gas fires in each room as well as the boiler.

Cost will vary but I charge £45 plus vat for a service, I would say £75 is a bit steep.
Advice for you would be to make sure you get a landlords report and that the engineer is competant to carry out work on the appliance. (ticked on back of Corgi card)

Bigmac,

Now you mention it - I think the £75 was for the Landlords check/cert quoted whenI was considering renting out my house.
