Default House Being Rewired

Hi Everyone,

The landlord is getting the house I rent rewired, I have had a couple of people round to give him quotes.

Now, what I want to know is:

Both have said that they will have to chop into the wall for some wiring, who is responsbible for redecorating after this. There is nothing wrong with the decoration as it stands as I only did it a little while ago.

I am not in a position to redecorate again as I cannot afford it.

Would the land lord have to contribute to this?

If the landlord has elected to re-wire (s)he is responsible for the costs of any remedial works resulting, such as redecorating.

Although, they may not be willing to redecorate to the standard which you previously had it (wallpaper, for example).

At least your home will be a safer place for you and your's?

I am hoping that it wont be to much damage!

If the landlord has to help redecorate, I would prefer if he gave me the money for paint etc., and I do it myself. I decorated just 6-12 months ago.

I know the wiring will be safe when it is done, but I am just not looking forward to the upheavel.

What I cannot understand is how can timescales from different electricians be different, one says over 2-3 days, the other 2 weeks!

Thanks for advice.

At worst, there will be a one inch wide chase into the wall leading to every switch and socket - these will obviously be plastered by someone, and then need redecorating. The worst thing will be the dust whilst it's being done!
If you have young children who suffer from asthma, it may be worth considering staying elsewhere whilst the worst work is being done (usually one day, two at the most).
