joint tenancy--who decides who can stay in the flat?

i'm currently in a joint tenancy agreement. my flat mate wants someone to stay in our flat for a week who has been extremely disrespectful towards me in the past. before we moved in, we even talked about this person and decided that they would not be able to stay with us if they were to visit the area. however, he's now gone back on that, and i still do not want the guest to stay here. do i have the right to say that this person cannot stay with us and ask them to leave?

Of course you do! its your home. The problem is its going to be impossible for you to force that outcome, your flat mate wants them to stay. If you cant talk them out of it then theres not a lot you can do unfortunatley.

I would suggest you start looking for alternative accomodation for when your tenancy ends, and make this known to your flat mate.

If you hate this person that much, would it be possible to stay with friends relatives for a week? I know you shouldnt have to but thats the only way you are going to avoid them.

I concur with Planner. Not much you can do; the other tenant is perfectly entitled to have guests. All you can do is make it known that you are very disappointed and hope that sour atmosphere will discourage future visits. I find that boiling old socks, leaving nits and fleas treatment for all to see in a bathroom, keeping some nice, "mature" cheese in a fridge helps.
