Default Question on homeless

Hi, can you help,
I am currently renting my home with a private landlord, whom I have been with now for 3 years, only my partner lost his job recently, and we have found ourselfs unable to pay the rent of £500 per month ffrom my wage alone,
Im not entileted to housing benifit as I earn to much, but we are finding it nigh on impossible to manage to pay the general bills and cost of living and eating on what we have left.
My landlord agreed that he would help us in anyway he can and served me my 2 months notice. I took this along to the local council authority who have taken all my info, but have said they will not consider placing me on the registered homeless list, untill 4 months has expired, and that is after my landlord has taken me to court and obtains a eviction notice.
Is there anything else I can do? I dont want an eviction notice on my name! and I also do not want to privately rent any more, as I was in this position 6 years ago when my landlord at that time was selling the house,
but things have changed since then as I was placed on the list, and they offered me a home 3 months later(unfortunatley I didnt take the home they offered and continued private renting-silly girl)
Can any one else offer me advice? as Im still confused as to what the council can do for me... if anything!
Kelley

this link should do the trick: Revised Homelessness code of guidance for local authorities, July 2006

May i ask how do you know that you are not entitled to Housing Benefit? Have you been assessed by professional adviser?
