Default housing association

to make a long story short our local housing association will only allow us 2 bedrooms for 2 adults and 2 children , they say the children can share until they are 8.Both of the children have ailments that cause them to have disturbed sleep , our gp has written to the H.A. stating to them that the children should not share rooms because of this and asked them to give us a 3 bedroomed allowance , they have had a meeting and said no dissmissing the medical advice as they say they have a high demand for properties. Are they within their rights to do this?can i take it further?

Matty,

The Housing Association are within the rights on this, if 3 bed properties are in high demand, and no properties are available, quite simply the HA can't give you a 3 bed property. And a letter from a GP is nothing more than a recommendation.

Plus at the end of the day, Housing Associations are perfectly within the right to refuse to give anyone a property.

Gone are the days of when housing was under local authority control where you could get local councillors involved, but now with housing associations it is run as a business, and can choose who gets a house and who doesn't.

matty2303; keep kicking up the fuss, because you are actually "entitled" to extra room if there are medical reasons. The trouble is, due to great shortage of properties, the first, second, third.....ninth answer will be "no", but eventually you may get there. I would strongly suggest that you speak to a locally based housing adviser/solicitor. They will know local circumstances and the best tactics. You can find local resources here: Shelter: Advice services directory
