Default Speed Ferries Cancellation

I travelled to France over Christmas, with a return journey booked for December 30th. When we got to the port we were told by the ferry co. that their boat was out of service and we would have to make our own way home. It cost us £130 to come back via Eurotunnel but Speed Ferries have said they are not liable - although we have sought the advice of the public side of the OFT and they say it was breach of contract. We wanted to see if anyone else had had this problem, especially over this new year period, and what they were doing about it. Thanks.

Write to Speedferries, and tell them that their breach of contract has cost you £130, and you want that refunded + the return portion of your ferry ticket + whatever additional costs which were a direct consequence of their breach. (you will have to be able to show what those costs were, though, receipts, etc) Tell them you want the refund actioned within 14 days or you will issue a claim in small claims court to recover those costs. After 14 days, 2nd letter giving them one last chance, after 14 days, issue N1 as above.

Come back for help with filling in N1 if needed to make sure it's as tight as possible.

Cheeky sods.

To Bookworm,

Thank you for this information - we have sent one letter and so will follow it up, being a little more 'forceful' this time. It is just a relief to know that we may have a case.

Let us know how you get on.

We have a "review" section elsewhere on the forum, if you have a bit of spare time, maybe you could add yours to the Speedferries one to help others?

Hi,

I work for a BBC1 consumer affairs programme called "Don't Get Done, Get Dom", in which presenter Dominic Littlewood attempts to resolve issues that have arisen between consumers and companies.

Having read your story, we would be extremely keen to hear from you to see if there is anything we might be able to do to help.

If you would like to talk to us, please get in touch at:

Thanks very much,
