Default PC World and damaged laptop screens

Hello all,

I am taking PC World to the small claims court, about a cracked screen on an ADVENT Laptop.

They say I broke it.....I say the screen was defective and cracked after 2 hours of extremely light use

Has anyone had experience of cracked, or damaged screens, on ADVENT or any other type of laptop, after short period of time, or straight out-of-the-box?

Thanks...this will help me build my case against PC World

Generally, I would say that if the screen is intact when it came out of the box then any damage later will have been caused through impact. It takes a lot more pressure than you would think to break the screen and I've not come across one that has torn without misuse.

Might be worth checking the hinges to see if they are aligned correctly. If not, pressure might have been placed on the screen when opening and closing the lid causing it to tear.

my advice. if you have only just bought it. then you could have said it was cracked from purchase. admitting it was fine when you turned it on and 2 hours later it cracked weakens your case. if you mention there was a slight crack already as you opened the box, and as soon as u closed the lid after 2 hours it split further.

laptops meant to last for a certain time, 2 hours of just opening and closing lid aint that long.

only problem though is laptop screens (no matter who made it) are weak. i have had friends who damaged their 40" TV's just putting it into their cars. so even if there was a crack from opening the box. they could defend it saying it must have happened in your car.

the store does not inspect each box it receives from manufacturers before passing to you. so its hard for them to prove it not happen in their warehouse/store stockroom, or in delivery to store.

but just using the after 2 hours it cracked is a weak defence.

the store policy is not to deal with legal issues to pass you onto the legal department. and where cracks occur the instoer staff including technicians are not trained on laptop repairs. (they are mostly software installers, upgrade installers) so use the techguys or customer services

Indeed gyzmo, the usual pile of crap we've come to expect. Oh and I see that ROPV is now advising people to lie about the problems they have with their equipment and not only in this thread. And as for phoning the tech guys or customer services, purleeze spare me!

I would be inclined to agree with that, have PC World inspected the laptop? They need to, to prove whether or not the item was faulty when purchased - as per their legal obligations.

Up to 6 months it is for the retailer to prove that it wasn't faulty when purchased. After that time, it is for the buyer to prove that it was.

In this case - 2 hours use, the retailer (PCWorld) cannot simply assert that the fault is customer damage - they have to prove it.

Yes, which is what I was saying. To fulfil their obligations, they have to at least inspect the machine in store. Or get an engineer to investigate the damage.

I have never seen a laptop screen crack when the machine has been looked after. Likewise USBs snapping or power pins breaking. Intentionally or not, misuse is often the cause of such issues. As small a thing as leaving a pen on the keyboard can crack the screen when the lid is closed. LCDs are fragile...

PC World will probably take the laptop away and have a look at it, which they are entitled to do, because by law it is considered faulty unless they can prove otherwise.

Laptop screens done just crack. Generally it is pretty easy to see impact damage and the point of impact. I have yet to see a screen just crack. Any decent tech would be able to see the cause of the problem and the point of impact.

I've seen a laptop screen crack because one hinge was stiff. Opening the laptop caused the screen to twist and crack.

Ok Cracks with Laptop screens......

A situation that has to be handled carefully....
What happens:

Customers return to the store explaining that the screen has cracked. You can stand there and argue with the manager/ saes advisor but that wont get you anywhere!
All you have to do is send it the Tech guys/manufacturer explaining that you think it is a manufacter fault, they get a tech rep from *eg... sony and they examine laptop at tech guys and make a descion 90% it usually is a fault. be patient!!! ringing up everyday will get you NO WHERE
