they often use second hand parts - which is a bit naughty, but I bet the kid got caught looking at porn by his father and claimed he didn't do it.

Refurbished parts are often used, this is stated in their service agreements and is no real secret.

However, I must admit to being slightly sceptical about this story. Transferring a hard drive from one laptop to another without running the restore program on it would more than likely cause driver issues and that's if it would boot up at all without Windows protection errors and stuff.

I'm not saying it didn't happen, but i'm sceptical. I'm more inclined to take Blacksheep's version.

I thought that most of the more hard core porn sites required a deibi or credit card to view then, anyway, if he had been surfing for porn, it is quite easy to track the sites visited.

Nobody pays for porn on the internet, if he got it from a friend as is likely the case it will be untraceable

This is BS, I know for a fact.

During my employment at the Tech Guys I did a stint in the laptop workshop, all the hard drives are new.

There's no point in having an old drive hanging around and bunging it into the new machine (because it will of come out of an old machine which is knakard), there's no point in using refurbed drives either because it's actually cheaper and more practical to use new ones.

All old drives get destroyed anyway in there.

Now the drive was replaced and obviously there would be an image that would of been put on the drive.

When the repair work is completed it is then passed to another engineer to check the system over and then signs their name to the effect the machine is in working order, with the bare os and pre-installed software.

Nobody has time to look at porn there as each engineer has around 10-15 laptops a day! Not only that the internet connections are so locked down it's unbelievable, trust me anything to do with porn rings alarm bells at DSG hq, which is in Hemel as the internet is a feed via VPN from there. (basically means the internet comes from another computer sharing it the other side of the country and is monitored and all the dodgy stuff is blocked big style).

What also stands out to me is they say they turned the machine on and some spyware killer kicked in and said it found a virus.

Erm - No DSG system comes pre-installed with a spyware killer and secondly spyware removal tools don't detect viruses.

Now based on this information that somebody obviously at their home has installed a spyware killer means they access the internet.

Sorry but 2 and 2 together here does make 4.

That kid was bashing the bishop to a bit of beastality, it's clear to me lol

For something to 'pop-up' there has to be something triggered for it to pop-up!

I.e: Being on a website associated with this kinda thing then it pops up some dodgy stuff.

Also if the program detected something, it would of cleared it, so the system would not be popping this stuff up, if there was an intention to do so by the alledged spyware.

Amazing how these stories evolve around kids using machines then it's the parents who run off to the press when it wasn't them initially using the machines.

Anyway, that's my essay over for today folks lol

just playing devils advocate (as I believe it was the kid looking at porn), but even without internet connection there are ways of looking at porn - external HD's, thumb drives and other removable media.

You're not wrong fella.

To be honest I didn't think of that, I'll take it back about them not having time to look at porn lol

What strikes me as odd tho is, the repair centre is basically like an open plan office so anybody from anypoint can see your screen so sitting there, rigging up an external drive, wacking it on and checking out the delights of sharon does scooby is pretty slim there.

I'm not saying it's 100% impossible but with the quality control procedure it's very very unlikely.

If it was in a store and not the laptop workshop then I'll say it would be a bit more possible/easier as the repair teams are a bit small and sometimes engineers will be left alone to complete repairs but I'll not go into that as I could be classed as suggesting they do lol.

Also forgot to mention it's forbidden to bring in your own computer bits, especially hdd's as you could be ripping customer data, this is checked by security everyday.

Anyway... I'm not sticking up for them it just smells a bit fishy...

The story, not the dog... or the girl.... then again it could smell a bit, woudn't know I've not been in that position lol

The original article says nothing about "tech guys" being envolved. Could this hard drive have been installed in store?? Could it have been removed from a similar machine with another but different fault? could it still contain all its original data?.
Funny things can happen in PC World Stores, the fairies do come out at night you know.
How come all PC World security staff look like they have spent all their dinner money in Burger king opposite, and how come most of them seem to give the impression that they do nothing all day but surf the nett looking for left handed webb sites?

The stores are tight, they'd skin a fart for a penny.

Using their own parts to fix a laptop when The Tech Guys will happily do it for free? Do you do stand up by any chance?

windows installed on one machine won't run on another if you change more than a few parts. Therefore they would have had to do a fresh install of windows. The chances of the porn coming from the store are slim at best and the chances of a teenage boy looking at porn on the internet... - well I know which story I'd be betting my money on.

Its all about the boy looking at the porn.
MY money is on the dad downloading the stuff, and the kid found it.
Obviously Dad can't own up to it, so blames PC World.

Blatantly the kid, and who can blame a kid that age for being curious? I certainly would not.

But then, equally the kid is embarrassed getting caught and comes up with a scapegoat...

I can't see how this could have happened another way.

Perhaps another of our four-legged friends though?
