Default Acer Laptop Computer

About 3 years ago a friend bought a laptop for about £840.

No EW

15 months later, the screen packed up. It was returned to PCWorld who said that the screen needed replacing and they quoted over £700 for the repair.
Needless to say we refused (by that time I was involved with the case).

We started to try and discuss it with them but their repsonse was that the item ws out of guarantee and as there was no EW, the repair would have to be paid for.
We threatened legal action and were ignored. We eventually started a claim in the County Court and alleged a breach of the Sales of Goods Act 1979 as amended, on the grounds that the computer was not of satisfactory quality contrary to s.14 SGA.

As you might expect, suddenly PCWorld started to take interest. They asked to see the laptop again and we let them have it. Within a short time they came back with a revised estmate for the work saying that the screen only needed to be repaired - for £220!!
They offered us £220 plus the cost of the summons. We refused and two days before the hearing we received an offer of the full amount which we accepted.

Doesn't it tire you out dealing with all this shameless moneygrubbing on the part of these companies and know that barring what you were entitled to by law in the first place, you get sod all by way of recompense?

Lord knows the consumer is punished when their efforts aren't up to scratch...

I've written a letter for my friend David, Sony have replied saying as they are the manufactures they do not fall under the articles of the sale of goods act 1979. Is this true??

If you did not buy direct from the manufacturer, then your gripe is indeed with the retailer that sold you the goods and not the manufacturer.
