Default Stopped for medication - given parking ticket

Can I stop on a single yellow to take medication without a traffic warden taking my photo? I have not been given a ticket so far but the warden said I would be sent one.

I am a diabetic and there is just 2 parking bays in the whole high street.?? clearly not enough spaces or dedicated car parks.

Single yellows mean no waiting during their hours of operation.

Medical emergencies can be claimed as an exemption but in relation to regular scheduled medication I think you will rely on the LA being sympathetic.

You can now have a ticket issued from CCTV images or sent in the post if the CEO has started to issue it.

If its scheduled medication...no. If its a medical emergency yes but if you have diabetes you shouldn't really be driving unless you have it under control and not get to that stage.

Perhaps if you fully understood diabetes you wouldn't make such a remark.

I am used to it now, people think its a disability hence the comment - what people do not understand is when you get a cold and your a diabetic the sugar levels rise.... no big deal. I have seen people have tickets put on their cars for stopping to help an elderly man who had fallen over in the same high street .. utter disgrace!!

Use of cameras again - only in the UK these laws are not allowed in Europe.

I am fully aware of diabetes thanks! Maybe you think its acceptable for someone to drive and not to be aware of the symtoms until they are hyper/hypoglaecemic? Going unconsious in the fast lane of the M1 is not really advisable. A responsible diabetic would check their blood sugar levels BEFORE driving and when SAFE to do so at regular intervals on a long journey.

It is actually classed as a disability under the DDA.

lets be adult about this no one is going to fall into a state of unconsious just becuase they are diabetic. Thats a shallow comment if ever I heard one and suggests that diabetics are potential killers.

You have to understand that any increase in blood sugars is potentially damaging nerve tissue... so you do not pass out unless your sugar is too low... and before you get there you would have responsibly taken the correct action.

Trouble is towns are hell bent on removing parking facilities so they can make a quick profit. I have my licence and drive more than 40,000 miles a year.

Oh yes they are.

That is why Type1 diabetics have their licences withdrawn by DVLA until they satisfy medical experts.

Type2 diabetics cannot go hyper as their bodies do produce some insulin - it's just that it is not fully effective.

Total rubbish !! again an uninformed guess - Most diabetes type 1 sufferers are no more a risk than any normal driver - dont accept that?then consult DVLA and Diabetes UK

Well documented medical facts is somthing you cannot argue with, anyone can copy and paste a few lines. What you are trying to suggest is ALL diabetics with type 1 should not be on the road.

If you have diabetic type 1 the you have to inform the DVLA and your insurer, the doctor will be consulted and you have a restricted licence for 1,2 or 3 years.

Type 2 advise DVLA and insurer who apply no restrictions, licence until 70 same for non medicating diabetics.

As a qualified first aider I have to disagree I've had to treat two diabetics who had passed out due to their condition. Its perfectly safe to drive if you manage your condition properly, which is why I said you should not be driving and have a medical emmergency.

Hyperglycaemia (high blood sugar)

Symptoms
  • Prolonged onset
  • Breathing is difficult
  • Breath smells sweet or musty
  • Excessive thirst
  • Dropping level of consciousness
Management
  • If conscious – keep comfortable
  • If unconscious – on side (supported), or in the recovery position
  • Call 111 and ask for ambulance
Hypoglycaemia (low blood sugar)

Symptoms
  • Sudden onset
  • Weakness or faint
  • Sweating
  • May feel nauseous, vomit
  • Limbs may tremble
  • Confusion, lowering consciousness
  • Mimics intoxication
  • Seizures may occur
Management
  • If conscious – give something sweet
  • If unconscious – on side (supported), or in the recovery position
  • Call 111 and ask for ambulance

<snip>
I understand diabetes as my mum was a diabetes specialist nurse for years however the time I phoned the police to report a drunk driver I was following (he was swerving from verge to verge on blind bends and almost ramped off a safety fence and rolled his car) only to be told he was a diabetic having a hypo. So there is a slim chance that it could happen.

As has been stated, hyperglycaemia (high blood sugar) causes long term problems. Can also cause tiredness. But it is not an immediate problem that requires insulin right at that precise moment.
Hypogycaemia (low blood sugar), on the other hand, IS an immediate problem, but not one that needs insulin. It's easy to pop a sweet in your mouth to bring your sugar levels back up quickly.
I have to ask the question, Do you have difficulty in recognising the onset of a hypo? I know that some people do. If that is the case then it is advisable to check your blood sugar level before any journey, if you are the driver.

Rooster.
