excel parking charge

over stayed my time in a free two hour car park. got back to the car just as he was putting my details in to his machine. he said he could not cancel it. so i just got in and drove off. a Letter has now arrived saying i owe 100 quid . would have been 30 but i never got that bit. i wrote and told them i never had the first charge and as i had not had any ticket on my car. they said it was clear i had exceeed the time. and to pay up or court action may be considerd. reading some off the other threads it says the law states that the notice must be fixed to the car to be legal if this is so how come they have not backed off. also how long do they send threating letters for .has any body gone through this and got to the end . thanks for any help

This is not a FINE, it is an invoice requesting you to pay..
