Default Busted! We genuinely didn't realise.

Stopping in chester late last sunday afternoon for dinner on our way home from liverpool, My father in law parked on a small car park near the town centre, we took an hour over dinner and were surprised to find a £50 ticket on the windscreen.

It turned out to be a pay and display carpark, there was a ticket machine by the entrance to the carpark, we must have all been tired after our day out because non of us even noticed it. There was a small reminder sign out the footpath we took out of the carpark but it was obscured by foliage.

Had any of us noticed any of these signs we would have certainly payed for the parking ticket happily.

I feel that the signs were insufficient.

I live in a town where empty parking spaces (free and pay and display) are hard to find and traffic wardens are rife (maybe 3 wardens for a very small area)

All the pay and display car parks in my town are clearly labeled with red and white signs, perhaps one for every 5 spaces.

Do we have leg to stand on in appealing against this?

Depends on how bad the signage was and the validity of the PCN. Sadly not knowing it was a pay and display is not an excuse on its own. Post the PCN and pics if any and you may get a bit more help.

I have no pictures but refer to this thread...

Now I asked my father in law and he tells me that "date of offence" is NOT printed on the ticket and the term offence is used several times on the ticket.

Which why I asked to see the ticket you got it may be an ECN not a PCN. You seem to have your wires crossed anyway you are claiming it does not have 'date of offence' then stating its incorrect because it mentions 'offence' .
If you don't display the ticket or the text on it or at least give the location there is no way you can expect acurate advice.

No need to be sorry its just that without knowing the facts its very hard to give advice.
