Default ALLDERS Croydon-Waiting forever for sofas

Hi
We ordered for two single reclining sofas and a three seater on 14-July with Allders Store in Croydon, and paid the full amount (around 1000GBP) on the same day. The estimated delivery time was 12-14 weeks. But, its already 15 weeks now, and when I went in and enquired about it, they had no clue on the delivery dates. So, one of the salesmen took my details and promised me to call back with some details.
It took them around a week to come back to me, but as per the Allders Manager the items have to be shipped from China and the shipment is delayed somewhere in the ocean between China and UK. So, they are looking for another 3-4 weeks of delay. We are very dissappointed because as first time buyers, we dont have any furniture in the house, and have been looking forward for these sofas to arrive soon.

What can we do in this case??? I think its not worth going to Allders and claiming our money back, as they had already had it for 4 months now. Also, it would take another 5-6 weeks to get in new sofas from any store.
Kindly recommend!!

Did you order these by distance (internet / phone etc) or in-store?

I would ask for either the order to be cancelled as they are in breach of their terms and conditions (may have a fight and will depend on the contract), or, as my friend did in similar circumstances, ask for money off (he got £50 for each week it was late - £350 in total!).

Writing a polite but firm letter to HO usually helps as well.

Thanks.. But, do you think it would be wise, if I have to cancel the order now.. after waiting for 17 weeks now.. I may still have to wait for 4-6 weeks even if I have to order from another retailer.

I like your other idea to ask for the damages.. I did speak with the Manager for the furniture shop at Allders. We have planned to meet on Monday, 05-Nov and I had made clear that I need a sofa by then.. If mince doesnt arrive, he will have to provide me with a temporary sofa which can be replaced when my sofa arrives from China.

Is there anything else, you think I can do??

Cheers

Tell the shop that time is now of the essence and that they have 14 days in which to deliver or you will be cancelling.
I know you don't really want to cancel after waiting all this time and it's probably a gorgeous suite, but they need shaking up a bit.
