Default My Dad had a long stay in hospital recently

My Dad had a long stay in hospital recently. . . . .

Does anyone have a figure on how much a week in an NHS hospital costs, just the staying there - no operations etc. also, how much it costs to replace a pacemaker ??

I will give the rest of the story when I have some figures to work with.

Cheers

A standard hospital bed, i.e. not intensive care or high dependancy is, I believe, around £200 per 24 hrs

My dad was in a ward with 6 other men all waiting to have a pace maker fitted. They were all quite well other than the time was nearly up for their old pacemaker so they needed a new one fitted. They had to stay in hospital for 6 weeks to keep their place in the queue and for no other reason. . So, 6 men X 7 days X 6 weeks X £200 = £58,500 wasted, that’s £2,628,000 over a year for that one ward!

The men were all bored out of their skulls and had no need to be in hospital that could not be sorted out with a simple change in hospital policy.

The health services are crying out for more money and wasting millions at the same time. . That money could have paid for dozens of operations or paid for expensive life saving cancer drugs.

H sorry to highjack your thread but my grandparents are over (Live in South Africa- ie they arent british i amd my dad are) and recently my gran had to go to hospital. Looks like she may be in there for 1-2 weeks. Based on the £200 a day mark - This could add upto £2000 maybe more depending on x-rays, ops and tests.

My parents didnt get them insurance and are faced with a bit of a dilema. Is there anything anyone knows that may help?

The NHS will treat anyone that presents for emergency treatment. they may then claim recompense from the patients country of origin. depending on that countries set up for healthcare their government may then try and claim from the individual or it may cover treatment under it's own health service. You will not be asked to pay a bill by the NHS.

Unlike someone I know who was burnt motor racing in SA and had to cough up £2000 before they would even touch him, not even analgesia.

When you see other countries national healthcare systems it makes you realise that actually the NHS isn't that bad!
